Vermintide 2 developer Fatshark isn’t being shy about the influence their Age of Sigmar game has had on the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.

Revealed today during the Xbox Games Showcase, Darktide is bringing the Vermintide formula to the distant future, exchanging Ratmen for Nekron, and medieval combat for something a little more high-tech.

The Darktide trailer (below) shows a very nervous – and underequipped — Imperium recon squad investigating unrest in a Hive City. Unfortunately for them, the resident of the arcology have apparently been turned into mutants, and they aren’t happy to see visitors.

While the trailer ends rather abruptly, Fatshark has issued a press release that shares a few more details about the upcoming game. The similarity between the titles Vermintide and Darktide is no accident: according to Fatshark, they are “utilizing the knowledge and experience honed from the Vermintide franchise in this new take on the 40,000 universe.”

Darktide is confirmed to feature 4 player CO-OP and first-person combat, just like Vermintide. The press release also states that “Players will not be able to hide behind lethal ranged weapons, they’ll need to combine both FPS and melee skills as they get up close and personal in visceral clashes between Imperium and Chaos factions.” So, expect Darktide to remain melee-focused. There are ranged weapons for every class in Vermintide 2 (bows, staffs, guns) so we’ll likely still see guns and flamethrowers in Darktide, but in an effort the maintain that feeling of being completely overwhelmed, Darktide will lean into melee combat.

What sorts of melee weapons might we see? There are plenty of amazing weapons to pull out of 40k lore. Chainswords, Hunting Lances, and Frost Blades are all popular choices among the Imperium, and knowing Fatshark, we can expect some creative and exciting ways to slaughter the horde.

Vermintide 2 is still getting plenty of support over 2 years after release. Last year’s Winds of Magic expansion was a bit underwhelming, but Fatshark has since released several new maps and an entirely new class for Kruber, the Grail Knight, which has been very well received. More content for Vermintide 2 is on the way, and the game is currently in the middle of a major rebalancing update.

Darktide will release sometime in 2021.
