The Far Cry series will never run out of steam as long as developer Ubisoft continues to refine and innovate with new gameplay mechanics and exciting locales, while also adapting the series’ known formula for the next generation of gaming. The fifth installment drops the unique protagonist approach in favor of a player-created avatar trapped in the middle of a cultist war in the fictional town of Hope County, Montana.

Though some of the series’ more stale and mundane aspects remain, Far Cry 5’s domestic setting breathed new life into an already blossoming IP that knows exactly what makes it unique. If visiting Mars and fighting intergalactic parasitoids weren’t odd enough, here are some mods that will surely hold you over until Far Cry 6 launches later this year.

10 Winter Wonderland

Courtesy of RealArmanIII, Hope County got a little taste of the Christmas spirit. Now’s the time to visit and realize that it’s the same wonky town you’ve come to love just now, well, covered in snow.

Visit Hope County today and enjoy the beautiful Montana scenery you can’t find anywhere else. Oh, and try to avoid the wild wolverines and drugged-up cultists. Did it mention all of this in the brochure?

9 Get A Head Start

This mod by khaos277 creates a save file directly after the prologue, granting the player 40 perk points to spend and over $100,000. Try and not cause too much destruction, it’s a peaceful town on most days.

The modder writes, “I will be updating this hopefully every ten perk points or until a New Game Plus is released.” If you’re having trouble installing the mod, there is an instructional video available covering how to create multiple save files. Having access to that many perk points and cash from the get-go will surely encourage another playthrough!

8 Cult Millionaires

This mod requires you to also download and install the Rich Cult mod created by Schrotflnite12, which drops $75 after killing any cultist and also includes an optional resistance points package. Now that we got the prerequisites out of the way, have fun cleansing Hope County of the filthy, wretched cultists and robbing them of their inexplicable fortune.

They live like animals, prey on innocent residents of Hope County, and drape themselves in the exact same cultist uniform every single day, but they’re bold enough to fill their pockets with $2,000 everywhere they go. Maybe it’s better off you hold onto that cash instead. Use that cash to buy a rocket launcher that fires shovels or a slingshot that shoots arrows.

7 True Montana Graphics

Whatever that means. Thanks to modder MadMaxLiS, players can now experience Hope County as if it was beaten and tortured in a grindhouse film. The colors are completely oversaturated, but it does make for quite the unique look.

Far Cry 5 is already a beautiful game in the graphics department, but the True Montana Graphics mod only heightens the experience, kind of. Check out the official page for screen-by-screen comparisons of the base game and the mod. Apparently, MadMaxLiS wasn’t too impressed with the original’s graphical quality, simply stating, “This mod gives the game realistic graphics that it deserves.”

6 Boomer The Pitbull

This mod, created by lasermohawk replaces Boomer’s original model with a Pitbull customizable reskin. That’s right, this mod offers up to three colored collars to pick from in the companion menu.

It’s important to note that this mod works in co-op, but your partner must also have the mod already installed and activated for them to see the new model.

5 Escape From Far Cry 2033: Deliverance

The 3DArtist’s Masterpiece mod by 3DArtist  offers several reshade presets from some of your other favorite RPGs. These presets include, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Battlefield 1 & 4, Dishonored 2, Fallout 4, Metro 2033, Project Cars 2, Skyrim, Far Cry 4, and Escape From Tarkov.

Though not an absolute game-changer, the 3DArtist’s Masterpiece does create some faithful reshaders to all of the listed games, while also priding itself on zero performance issues after installation and activation.

4 K-Rose And K-DST Radio (GTA San Andreas)

Courtesy of MatheusVitor275, one of the more popular mods for Far Cry 5 adds the K-Rose and K-DST radio from GTA San Andreas. In the details section, the modder lists specific installation instructions as well as the tracklist available for your truck’s radio in-game.

The UI is super simplistic and easy to install and use. Some tracks include notable hits from David Bowie, Kiss, Billy Idol, The Who, and Tom Petty. Try closing your eyes while in your cultist truck and maybe you’ll end up in San Andreas…or at the bottom of a cliff. They have a ton of those in Montana.

3 The Resistance Mod

Probably the most deserving of the spotlight, the Resistance Mod is the most versatile of them all. Not only are you able to control resistance points, but you can also add enemies after a region is liberated.

On top of what’s already offered, this mod also adds unreleased vehicles and weapons as well as their accompanying special skins. There are unreleased healing animations, restored animal skinning animations, restored takedowns from previous Far Cry games, previously inaccessible locations, extra player costumes, and optional rainfall. Hefty, ain’t it? The Resistance mod surely packs a punch.

2 Automatic Shotgun AS-12

This shotgun is an unstoppable wrecking ball of badassery. It’s available for purchase right from the start for $20,000 and has a magazine capacity of eight shells. Move over alien Magnopulser, the Automatic AS-12 Shotgun is here to stay.

Creator Schrotflinte12 also states that it has both an automatic and burst fire mode. Odds are you won’t be using any other weapon once you get this in your virtual hands.

1 Guy Marvel’s Hours of Darkness

It’s important to preface that you’ll need the Hours of Darkness DLC expansion for this mod to be effective. Modder YossarianAssyrian brings the top-notch Hollywood action of the ’80s to Far Cry 5 with this “loadout-changing” mod.

According to the official page, enemy and ally weaponry sets “…now resemble a bombastic summer blockbuster.” This mod includes a Desert Eagle and new gun designs at your disposal. If you haven’t checked out all of the DLC for Far Cry 5, we highly encourage you to do so as it embellishes on ridiculous creative freedom.
