After a number of controversies and questionable gameplay practices, Bethesda’s Fallout 76 seems to be making a comeback, and it’s all thanks to the game’s latest Wastelanders expansion update.
After Fallout 76 released (and up until the release of Wastelanders), the game was met with harsh criticism due to its poor marketing strategies, annoying glitches and bugs, overall gameplay, and a lot more. All of that was just the tip of the iceberg, too; Things took a turn for the worse when it was revealed that Bethesda planned to introduce microtransactions into Fallout 76, frustrating fans ever further. If you combine that with the addition of the Fallout 1st subscription service and wrongfully banned community members, then saying the player base was up in arms would be an understatement.
Now that the Wastelanders update is officially out, more players are giving Fallout 76 a second chance and, much to their surprise, are finding redeeming qualities in it. In fact, the game as a whole has been receiving positive reviews over on its Steam page and now comfortably sits at a “Mostly Positive” score.
Interestingly enough, players who still held a grudge against Fallout 76 waited for the update to release before bombarding the game’s Steam page with more negative reviews. Whether they were trolls, anti-Bethesda detractors, or those who simply didn’t like the update remains unclear, but what is clear is that more positive reviews started to come out over time – eventually drowning out the negative ones. Essentially, Fallout 76 went from “Mostly Negative” to “Mixed” to “Mostly Positive.”
Although Fallout 76 still has its fair share of glitches and bugs (even after the Wastelanders update), the game is set to make a comeback and may prove to Fallout fans that it still has great potential. It may not be a traditional Fallout game, but the Wastelanders expansion update seeks make 76 feel more like its widely celebrated predecessors. As time moves on, it’s fair to expect that more Wastelanders content will be released, providing players with additional NPC quests and rewards.
