The NPD has now released ranking numbers related to video game sales within the United States for November. Several major titles released last month, including Fallout 76, which made an appearance on the list of best-selling games of November 2018.
To start, the crown for November was not in fact, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, but Red Dead Redemption 2 instead. RDR2 and Black Ops 4 were first and second, respectively, followed by another multiplayer shooter in Battlefield V. Fourth is a surprise in Fallout 76, with the post-apocalyptic RPG selling big numbers despite a rough critical reception. Rounding out the top five games for November is Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu (with Eevee in sixth).
As strong as Fallout 76’s sales may seem initially, the game is confirmed to have garnered fewer sales than previous games from the franchise, Fallout 4 and New Vegas. Still, the online multiplayer game did beat out Fallout 3, showing that it may be more popular than the current online discourse may imply.
The rest of the NPD’s full list of best-selling games in November isn’t too notable, given that that total top 20 is made up almost entirely of past releases. Nevertheless, it’s a great reminder of just what games had a particularly successful 2018.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Battlefield V Fallout 76 Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee NBA 2K19 Madden NFL 19 Spyro: Reignited Trilogy FIFA 19 Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey Super Mario Party Spider-Man Mario Kart 8 WWE 2K19 God of War Shadow of the Tomb Raider Just Dance 2019 Grand Theft Auto V Forza Horizon 4
One interesting detail is that if the list is stripped of sequels, remakes, reboots, and continuations of popular series, only one game would be left, and that is Spider-Man. Even then, though, the PlayStation 4 exclusive is still technically an adaptation. That’s not to say that original games aren’t making money, but rather that follow-ups typically make more money.
A notable absence in the list above is Far Cry 5, for even with the fourth most sales so far in 2018, it failed to crack the top 20 for November. Perhaps Ubisoft prioritized Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, or maybe FC5’s early launch opened the first-person shooter up to an audience it would have otherwise struggled to have found in late 2018.
Keep in mind that this list is exclusive to the sales within the United States and likely isn’t representative of other regions. Beyond this, though, it will be interesting to see what numbers are reported for December, and if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate manages to take the top sales spot across all regions next month.
Fallout 76 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
