As people return to the wasteland of Appalachia, they bring a variety of new quests into the world of Fallout 76. One of the first quests you should take as you explore the Wastelanders update is the quest Wayward Souls, which serves as a good introduction to some of the folks that inhabit West Virginia.
Wayward Souls begins at Vault 76, both for new players just emerging or old players visiting their old stomping ground. Just down the hill to the left from the Vault are two human NPCs. They are treasure hunters named Isela and Lacey, and they’ll direct you to a bar named the Wayward, just across the street from the Overseer’s Camp. They’ll also mention a secret treasure that used to be owned by another treasure hunter named Crane.
Talking to Isela and Lacey will also serve as the first introduction to the new dialogue system to many players. Dialogue has been revamped from a single interact button to a full dialogue system similar to Fallout: New Vegas, including dialogue options that are only available with different ability scores or perks.
If you follow the wastelanders’ instructions (or just go to the spot marked on your map) you find the Wayward. When you enter, you will find a man named Batter, who is also searching for Crane, holding a gun to the owner and operator of the bar, Duchess.
From here, you have a few options. You can sneak in while Batter is distracted and kill him without stopping to determine what’s going on. If you prefer not to shoot first and ask questions later, you can talk to Batter first. If you have the right S.P.E.C.I.A.L. scores – namely Perception, Charisma, or Luck – you can even talk him into leaving without a fight.
Of course, you can also do nothing. If you just stand there and gawk while all this is going on, eventually Duchess’s ghoulish friend and resident barfly Mort will kill Batter for you.
Whatever option you take to deal with Batter, this will complete Wayward Souls and start the next quest, Hunter for Hire.
