Bethesda games aren’t known for always hitting the mark when it comes to gameplay elements, and unfortunately Fallout 4 is no exception. Often times, lots of things are left unchecked, dodgy, or downright broken. Luckily, the modding community has produced some top-tier mods that can help change the gameplay of Fallout 4 for the better.
Today we’re examining 10 of these gameplay mods. Each one is designed to improve a vital cog in Fallout 4’s game mechanics machine. Use them simultaneously in your load order, and you’ll experience quite an improvement during your next playthrough.
10 FULL DIALOGUE INTERFACE
Dialogue is an important part of Fallout 4. You’re constantly interacting with a variety of settlers, companions and enemies, and often times communication plays a vital role in how the story progresses.
Full Dialogue Interface offers several ways to enhance the dialogue tree. You can set it to attach number keys to each possible reply, block sarcastic quips, and even display exactly what your character is going to say, instead of a paraphrase. It’s a little mod that goes a long way in revamping one of the most important components of Fallout 4.
9 SUPER SCRAP MOD
Rummaging around the Commonwealth looking for junk items can be a tedious, time-consuming process. It doesn’t help when the existing scrapping mechanic completely ignores some of these components when you dismantle an object.
Super Scrap Mod fixes this by intelligently scrapping items to give you the correct components. Scrapping a car no longer gives you nothing but steel, but also lead, screws, and nuclear material. The same goes for many objects in the game. This should cut down a lot of time hunting for key objects.
8 BETTER INVENTORY SORTING
The vanilla inventory sorting system is a bit of a mess, with lots of inconsistency. Better Inventory Sorting is a great fix that allows you to navigate through your inventory items in a much easier manner.
Items are now listed under subheaders including keys, notes and passwords, while a separate version of the mod can filter objects by type, such as Brotherhood of Steel, Pre-War and Institute items. Pick your pill, and banish inventory headaches for good!
7 BETTER COMPANIONS - ALL IN ONE
Companions tend to suck, regardless of what game you’re playing. Whether it’s Resident Evil 5, Skyrim or Fallout 4, your companions get stuck on things, shoot blindly at walls, and foil your attack plans at every opportunity.
Better Companions - All In One is a compendium of fixes for the game’s buddy system, increasing gun accuracy, combat efficiency and tactics. Their aggression states can even be programmed by the player via Pip-Boy settings. Best of all, they won’t give your position away while you’re sneaking.
6 SCRAP EVERYTHING
For the OCD in all of us, there’s Scrap Everything, a mod which requires no explanation (but we’ll give you one, anyways). It lifts the restrictions on what items can be scrapped, giving the player limitless options for ultimate settlement expansion.
Scrap flora, fauna, trash, roads, and so much more to pave the way for your uber-build. Be careful, however! When combined with other mods that disable settlement limits, it can scrap the wrong things and cause serious issues with your game! Watch where you’re pointing that crosshair!
5 LONGER POWER LINES
One of the most irritating facets of settlement building are the notoriously short power lines available when connecting electrical devices. Longer Power Lines comes in three flavors, with a 3x version allowing for the longest stretch.
Not only does this mod make it a lot easier to build, but it also gets rid of the need for multiple electrical junctions and connections. This helps keep your settlement from looking like the back of your TV cabinet.
4 START ME UP - ALTERNATE START
Just as Alternate Start - Live Another Life changed the way Skyrim players begin their game and crafted their own story, Start Me Up takes the same approach. While there are several Fallout 4 mods with the same premise, Start Me Up is the best of the bunch, for a few reasons.
Not only does it allow you to begin the game as a different Vault dweller, but it also allows you to start over as a post-war wastelander for a change of pace. If that’s not your cup of tea, Start Me Up can also be used to bypass the pre-war introduction sequence and start the game immediately at the point where your character wakes up from cryofreeze.
3 CRAFTING HIGHLIGHT FIX
We’re not quite sure why Bethesda decided to cast an ugly shader effect on crafting items, but it sure is an annoyance when you’re trying to see what you’re doing.
Crafting Highlight Fix knocks out this oversight and allows you to see the items in question, unadulterated. This is great, especially if you’re applying custom paint jobs to Power Armor, or tinkering with weapons. No more guesswork!
2 CRAFTABLE AMMUNITION
Since Fallout 4 forces you to MacGyver your way through most of the game, it only makes sense that ammunition crafting should be on the menu, as well. That’s precisely what Craftable Ammunition does.
The mod takes its cues from New Vegas, adding in a system that allows you to craft a Reloading Bench to create various ammo types, right down to gamma rounds and fusion cells. It’s an impressive system for overcoming the ammo shortage in the world of Fallout 4.
1 PLACE EVERYWHERE
Every Fallout 4 gamer has experienced that hair-pulling moment when they couldn’t properly place an object without going into the red. It’s enough to drive a saint insane!
Luckily, Place Everywhere fixes this by drastically overhauling the placing system to allow for near-perfect positioning of your objects. It lifts building restrictions and also allows you to re-position existing objects to your liking, but be sure to read the description to learn what this mod can and cannot do. Save often!
