Fallout 4 has an extensive settlement mode where players can craft their own little town into existence. With an extensive mode comes extensive choices for furniture and other useful tools. Some of these items are useful tools like workbenches and others are more unique. There are so many great items that players can create at their settlements, there’s even a craftable cannon!
This list will rank the 10 best settlement items that can be crafted at settlements throughout the wasteland. From water purifiers to radiation decontaminators, here are the 10 most useful settlements items that players can craft for their community in Fallout 4!
10 Guard Post
The guard post items in Fallout 4 allow the player to assign settlers to a station so they can protect the settlement. This is a necessary settlement item because, otherwise, players would only have turrets to choose from for settlement defense.
There are two variants of the guard post, one of them is flat and small while the other is more of a small tower. This item can also be a good place for the player to stand during an invasion to negate some bullet damage. Players should consider having at least a few of these posts scattered throughout their settlements.
9 Artillery Piece
The Artillery Piece is a powerful cannon that can be crafted at the Castle, the minutemen’s base of operations. There is a short quest that will initially lead the player into being able to craft it and once the quest is completed the player will be able to make a bunch of these powerful weapons for their settlement.
This is a fun way to protect the Castle during invasions and it doesn’t cost too much in terms of junk items. Players should consider having at least one of these if they have claimed the Castle as a settlement. This is quite an explosive weapon!
8 Water Purifier
The water purifier settlement items in Fallout 4 are a great source of fresh water and also caps. If the player sets up a bunch of these in their settlement then they will occasionally get bottles of freshwater deposited into their workbench. There are a few different versions of this item but they all basically do the same thing, just with different production amounts.
Players can take the water that they create and sell it to vendors and purified water has a nice high price, especially in large quantities. And if the player doesn’t want to sell them, more water for themselves and Preston!
7 Shop Stands
Shop stands can be placed around settlements to attempt to generate some money for the player. Settlers can be assigned to these stands to act as shopkeepers. Another benefit of having these little stores around is that the player will be able to buy most of the goods they need without even leaving their settlement.
Shop Stands are useful for so many reasons and there’s one for everything including weapons, armor, and food. Players should consider crafting a few of these in their little town, if for nothing else then to generate a few caps here and there.
6 Power Armor Station
Power armor stations let the player modify and repair their suits of power armor. Every player will need to wear power armor at least a few times and they’ll need a place to craft some toys for it occasionally. Can power armor get any cooler than allowing players to add a jetpack? Nope!
Some settlements may already come with this item however if they don’t then the player will have to craft it themselves which requires some scrap materials. Power armor is an essential in-game item and that makes the power armor station a must-have for the player’s favorite settlement!
5 Turrets
Turrets are especially useful because there are so many options for which ones to craft and they usually do very quick damage to invading enemies. Players can craft ballistic and also laser turrets in their settlements making for a tough choice when deciding which ones they want.
Players will need different perks for certain turrets however it’s totally worth it because these turrets will repel even the strongest mutants. At least a few of these are mandatory for a safe and functioning settlement where the settlers can relax and feel safe!
4 Generator
Generators are used by every type of wastelander for keeping the lights on. There are many different types of these that generate different amounts of electricity but all of them are useful and can help create a mini-society where settlers can have the luxuries of electricity once again.
Players should make sure to craft the appropriate size generator for their electric contraption otherwise they’re just going to waste junk items. This is one item that every settlement will need if they want to power their gizmos and gadgets. Luckily Codsworth can run without one!
3 Weapon Workbench
The weapon workbench is exactly what it sounds like, a place to modify weapons! Weapons in Fallout 4 are fully fleshed out and have so many different options and these workbenches help players realize their weapon’s full potential.
This is an especially useful item because weapons need to be kept up to date as the player levels up and encounters stronger enemies. Unfortunately crafting one of these benches does require the player to have a few perks however luckily many settlements come with a weapon workbench already set up. Happy crafting wastelanders!
2 Armor Workbench
Another workbench, the armor workbench is useful to any player that values their safety. Armor is essential to not getting one-shot by strong enemies and players will want to update theirs with the best possible modifications. Standard leather armor just won’t cut it at level 55!
Most armor modifications don’t take too many resources to craft so most players should be able to upgrade their clothing with at least a weak modification. The armor workbench is necessary for any wastelander that doesn’t want to be shot by a raider or scratched by a deathclaw while they are in battle.
1 Decontamination Arch
The decontamination arch removes all the radiation from the player’s body. Because of how rare and expensive both radaway and rad-x is, this item is an absolute must-craft for any player that adventures into dangerous parts of the wasteland often. The only downside to this arch is that it costs a lot of junk items to craft, but it’s definitely worth it saying goodbye to that beloved toaster for one of these bad boys!
The decontamination arch was added into the game with the Wasteland Workshop DLC and there aren’t many other settlement items that can rival this one in terms of usefulness. Every player should craft one of these for each of their settlements especially if they’re playing on the difficult survival mode!
