A ton of artistic work goes into video games. This is especially true when it comes to playing with world-building concepts. In an alternate history like Bethesda’s Fallout series, a lot of creative minds are put to the task to think of everything from fashion to mutated creatures and weapons.

Through concept art, fans can see how these ideas get developed. Some concept art shows the early stages of an idea that gets either cut or further developed while other pieces can just show what gamers recognize in a beautiful and artistic light.

Some companies release their concept in books. Bethesda often does this and thanks to The Art of Fallout 4, which was released in 2015, there are over 300 pages of concept art fans can look at.

10 Diamond City

Diamond City is like the heart of the Commonwealth in Fallout 4. It is a large city built into a baseball stadium. There are plenty of shops, places to live, and even a school for kids to learn.

In this concept art, the city center is laid out. The center of town as a noodle shop overseen by a Japanese robot and surround that shop is food stores, a barber shop, and more.

9 The Abduction Scene

One of the most emotionally charged scenes in the game is when the Sole Survivor witnesses the death of their spouse and kidnapping of their baby while trapped in a vault’s cryo-sleep chamber.

The scene is what fuels the plot once the Sole Survivor leaves the vault. They hope to avenge their spouse as well as save their child from whoever their kidnappers were.

8 A Workshop

What made Fallout 4 stand out from previous titles like New Vegas and Fallout 3 was its crafting mechanics. Not only could players craft armor and weapons, but they could completely customize settlements. Now there was more than just building a character.

This concept art shows what a typical workshop looks like. While Power Armor is not new to the series, players did get much more customization options. They could even give their armor paint jobs!

7 Goodneighbor

Goodneighbor is a shady town with a lot of heart. Its Mayor is a cool ghoul named Hancock and its citizens mostly consist of society’s outcasts who are not allowed in Diamond City.

This concept art has the sign for the Memory Den, a place in Goodneighbor where people can review their own memories. In times of the post-apocalypse, some ghouls get addicted to the Memory Den because they can constantly experience their Pre-war memories.

6 Lexington

Lexington is an area of the Commonwealth with several locations within. The tallest silhouette within the came as well as the concept art is the Coverga assembly plant, which is the home of a group of raiders in-game.

The area can be annoying to navigate through, as a partially collapsed highway bridge splits the area in two. That idea is easily seen in this concept art.

5 Boston

This concept art shows the city of Boston from above after the bombs fell. From this distance, it is difficult to determine any specific recognizable locations. There are skyscrapers just barely clinging to life as well as half sunken ships.

In the distance, a crater can be seen. That could be a landing spot for a bomb that went off.

4 The Bombs Going Off

This piece of concept art was actually shared at E3 in 2015. Another aspect of Fallout 4 that made it different from previous titles was that fans actually got a little bit of Pre-war gameplay at the beginning of the game.

For a bit, fans got to see what Pre-war life was like. They even got to run through the neighborhood to a vault as the bombs fell. This concept art captures that chaotic moment in Sanctuary Hills.

3 Boston Ruins

The ruins of Boston is a mess of crashed cars, broken buildings, and misplaced streetlights. All that chaos is captured in this fan art.

The character is wearing a full-body suit, possibly because of the danger of radiation. Within games, such clothes can help a player get less radiated. To the left appears to be an abandoned theater.

2 Brotherhood Of Steel

This is one of many concept art pieces by Ray Lederer, a Senior Concept Artist that does a lot of work for Bethesda. This particular page shows the exploration of what Brotherhood of Steel characters can look like.

Not all members of the Brotherhood of Steel are always wearing Power Armor. Within the Power Armor, they wear comfortable body suits like the one portrayed on the right side of this concept art.

1 Swan

Not all Super Mutants share the same design. In fact, some are very special like Swan. He has an entire backstory as a human named Edgar Swann who worked for the Institue and ultimately got experimented on.

A big part of what makes him unique is in his design, as he uses swan boat fragments as armor. He also uses a boat anchor as a weapon.
