As if solid reviews were not enough to prove Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’s success, the two million copies sold on Steam within its first week should detract any naysayers. Thanks to PlayStation Plus, PlayStation 4 owners received the game for free on release day, much like Rocket League.
The title is made up of a variety of game modes, each of which eliminates numerous competitors until one victor remains. These vary in entertainment and quality. Of course, not every player feels the same about these game modes, as personal tastes and skill effect which mini games one enjoys.
13 Perfect Match
Perfect Match is a simple game of memorization. Even those who lack the skill can just follow the crowd and usually end up surviving. Except for the occasional aggressive player trying to push people off the edge, there’s little risk in this mode. It ends up being boring and predictable.
12 Egg Scramble And Hoarders
These two are similar, but one has players grabbing eggs and the other sees the team fight for balls. Because of its reliance on teammates, the fun depends entirely on comrades’ competence. One skilled player can only do so much if the rest of the team is stumbling around. Better to be in a party with friends for both of these.
11 Tail Tag
Three varieties of this game mode exist: a free-for-all, team game, and a finale. When in a team, it all depends on how good the allies are playing. No victory is set in stone until the timer is up. A team in last place can shoot up to the top spot within five seconds.
10 Fall Mountain
In terms of final rounds in this battle royale, this one is probably the weakest and least tense. It is simply a race to the top and a final jump to grab the crown. Hilarity sometimes ensues as several people ahead of the pack jump for the crown and miss, either timing it wrong or not realizing they need to press the grab button to win.
9 Fall Ball
While teamwork is super important, the individual has a bigger impact in Fall Ball than in other team-based modes. If no one is defending the goal in the soccer-inspired bout, take the initiative and become the goalie. This way, Fall Ball is more entertaining than most of the other team games in Fall Guys.
8 Hoopsie Daisy
With the phrase “jumping through hoops” having such a negative connotation, it is surprising to see this game mode actually be so much fun.
Especially in video games, going through circles is often associated with Superman 64, but this mode manages to make jumping into circles entertaining.
7 Tip Toe
Like most other races, it is advantageous not to be in the front all the time. However, all other players are trying to push others onto squares to find out which ones are traps and which ones are safe to step on. A massive group is often huddled together and inching towards the goal. Once the path is clear, the round generally ends quickly after.
6 Jinx
This one is like the virus modes one finds in some first-person shooters. Don’t let opponents with pink clouds and lines circling around them touch you, or else you will become jinxed. When this happens, it is now the player’s responsibility to grab enemies and jinx them. The round ends when one team’s members are all jinxed. Running away from several jinxed foes at once is thrilling.
5 Rock And Roll
Three teams compete rolling a ball to the finish line. Most teams are evenly matched, with wins usually happening by a small margin. The endings of matches become super entertaining when the two remaining teams try to hold each other’s balls back. Some of these bouts can go on for minutes as the two vie for second place and escape elimination.
4 Roll Out And Block Party
These two survival modes vary slightly, but the idea remains the same throughout. There is an intensity here lacking in most of the other game modes. Some malicious players will try to grab others and doom their chances at survival. While this is upsetting, it is all a part of the Fall Guys experience.
3 Races
There are a large variety of races, but the rules remain the same: push forward through obstacles and don’t fall behind.
If one is not in front of the pack, seeing the other players finish increases tension and causes nervous players to start slipping up easy jumps. Just remember; you don’t have be in first place, you just have to not get eliminated.
2 Hex-A-Gone
Players constantly run around as the floor disappears beneath them in this final round. Several layers of floor exist before the pink slime eliminates players, causing some to try and reach the lower floors first to better control where they walk instead of having to jump to the last floating platforms on a particular level.
1 Slime Climb
This race deserves special mention because of the rising slime and the immediate elimination if the player falls off the map. The obstacles here are also particularly deadly. It is not uncommon for only five to ten people to actually make it through the arduous platforming gauntlet. Play some Crash Bandicoot or Rayman to prepare for this one.
