As we inch closer and closer to the release of Fairy Tail, Koei Tecmo has started revealing more about how the game will look and feel. In a new trailer called “Characters & Features,” we get a decent idea of how battles will play out and what new stories this game will be covering.
This doesn’t look like a recap of the current anime series, but some kind of side-story. To that effect, the character stories contained will be original events that take place in this game’s recreation of the Guild and the city. Fan-favorite Erza Scarlet is seen receiving an anonymous love letter, which is bound to lead to some anime hijinks.
The game will also be putting a spotlight on secondary characters from the anime. This was done in an effort to give fans an opportunity to better explore the otherwise overlooked characters. I couldn’t actually name you anyone (I’m not 100% familiar with the source material), but it should be a good bit of fan service for those heavily invested in the anime.
Gameplay, itself, seems like fairly standard RPG stuff. Characters have access to various types of magic -which makes sense as everyone is a wizard- and can team up with others for coordinated attacks. Persona-like bonding will play a big role, though it won’t work as a dating simulator.
The more often you use certain characters in your party, the stronger your bond with them will grow. This will unlock special attacks that will deal greater damage in battle. If you have a particular favorite, this seems like a good way to get them using their ultimate abilities. There will probably also be special side-stories that appear from these increased bonds.
After a few delays earlier in the year, Fairy Tail seems on track to make its July 31, 2020, release. As the first major game to be released on the brand, it seems to be shaping up nicely. The art style looks clean and the reported length of 30 hours likely cuts out the fat to deliver a concise story. That’s really all you could ask for from an RPG.
