Facebook Gaming has recently started holding charity events weekly via the Play Apart Together initiative followed by much of the gaming industry, and now it will also be holding tournaments for a similar purpose.
According to Next Level Gaming, the tournaments will be taking place every week on Thursdays where a bevy of celebrities will congregate to play and stream games in a tournament format. Some games that are part of this initiative include sports titles like NBA 2K20 and FIFA 20, as well as massively popular battle royale game Fortnite and the vehicle-based Rocket League. All of these have gained considerable traction in the competitive community and have become popular to stream as such.
All of the funding garnered from the tournaments will be contributed toward the UNF/WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund Facebook Fundraiser to help support it and its initiatives. Further, the winner of each weekly tournament will get to allocate an awarded $25000 to a charity of their choosing.
Although Facebook hasn’t been the most popular tech company in recent times, this initiative is highly admirable. At a time where health initiatives and public safety awareness need all the help they can get, Facebook Gaming’s contributions are very noteworthy. Hopefully, this will inspire other companies to support similar initiatives going forward.
