Reekwater is the name of the new zone that arrived with the Secrets of the Swamp update. Reekwater is a “vast, densely wooded, supernatural swamp” which local fisherfolk have learned contains many prime fishing spots. The entire zone is filled with “the pungent and sickly sweet smell of decay” that gives it its name, and was once the settlement of Bayou Village, a “new Venice” settlement built on the sunken ruins of an Ancient residential district destroyed by a flotilla of the Siren Queen. The Siren Queen now searches the swamp for her lost soul, with much of Reekwater’s population being enslaved and forced into work crews.
The new Reekwater quest lines involve somehow discovering “the origins of these Azoth-infused waters,” according to the updates’ patch notes. You’ll also be looking out for info on “the life cycle of the Dryads, and the role the Ancient Guardians played in this region of Aeternum.” Along the adventure, you’ll encounter a few new creatures, including the Swamp Dryads, Swamp Fiends, Creepers, Undead Pirate Brute, something called the Sufferance of the Elders, and its boss version, the Protector of the Source.
Additional new items include the new Fishing system, with a selection of fresh and salt water fish to fish for, and an Engineer-crafted fishing pole to fish with. On the combat side, the new Threat System has advanced to part two, and elite and champion enemies have been made more challenging with the introduction of part one of the new Elite Enemy System. Targeted healing has been improved to make it easier for support players to heal, and the Critical Hit System now allows players more ways to customize their character builds.
