Ustwo, the developer behind 2014’s puzzle game Monument Valley, has revealed its latest entry, Alba: A Wildlife Adventure. The objective of the game seems fairly straightforward — to clean up an island and record its fauna as part of a wildlife team.
Although the details are a bit scarce, we do know the game employs a camera and is based on childhood memories of summers spent in the Mediterranean, according to Ustwo. The teaser trailer reveals a water bottle, half-eaten sandwich, notebook and backpack, as well as, a paper titled Island Clean Up Initiative.
In addition, we view a book on Mediterranean fauna, a camera, some photographs and a newspaper headline that reads, Girls Start A Wildlife League. The trailer ends with a fleeting image of the title character on a cliff, overlooking a lush forest and beach. Ustwo has disclosed that Alba’s mission revolves around seeing an animal in danger and realizing she needs to take action.
As for other characters, we know that Alba has traveled to the Mediterranean to visit her grandparents and to explore wildlife with her friend Ines. The game follows the Facebook-exclusive Go Go Bots, Assemble With Care, an Apple Arcade original that has been released on Steam and updated with a free epilogue level, and Land’s End, an immersive adventure for Gear VR and Oculus Go headsets.
Monument Valley, whose visual style was inspired by by Japanese prints, minimalist sculpture, and indie games Windosill, Fez, and Sword & Sworcery, was compared by M. C. Escher drawings and Echochrome. It seems unlikely that Alba will follow in its footsteps, however, it will likely benefit from the Ustwo teams award-winning visuals.
Monument Valley won the BAFTA Video Game Awards for Best British Game and Mobile/Handheld Game. At the 2014 National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers (NAVGTR) Awards, the game won the category Game, Special Class. Oddly, the game was featured in HBO’s House of Cards when Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), who plays the game, selects video game reviewer Thomas Yates as his biographer after reading his description of Monument Valley.
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure will be released this winter for iOS, Apple TV, Macs, PCs via Steam, and consoles.
