This week’s issue of Famitsu Magazine (archived courtesy of Ryokutya2089) has revealed that Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition’s “Future Connected” epilogue will be roughly 10-12 hours in length. That will account for just the story portion as doing side quests could double that time.

A rough translation of an interview with Monolith Soft president Tetsuya Takahashi (provided by Siliconera) reveals a few other details, as well. According to him, this remaster exists because he felt bad about the character graphics in the original Wii version. That’s understandable considering the SD limitations of the console.

While the idea was to touch up lacking aspects from that Wii version, the soundtrack couldn’t be fully re-recorded. Instead of reusing the previous work, the new soundtrack is presented in higher quality and rearranged to have a new feel. This also goes for the data compression, which is notably better than the method used for Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

The scope of “Future Connected” could have been expanded upon, but the game’s director didn’t want to use up too many resources. During the production of this remaster, the first production team was split into three parts. One focused solely on touching up the original game, another worked on an unnamed new title -possibly Xenoblade Chronicles 3-, and the third group provided support to both.

Because of all of that, Future Connected won’t be as substantial as what Xenoblade Chronicles 2 received with its Torna - The Golden Country add-on. Still, you can’t knock what might end up being 15 solid hours of content. That’s roughly what I expected Future Connected to be and I’m happy I was right.

As much as fans may enjoy both Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and X, I personally feel the original is the best of the bunch. There’s a certain charm to its characters and world that the sequels haven’t managed to recreate. Expanding upon that with a new epilogue is enough to get me to rebuy the game, but I would have probably checked out if it ended up being the same length.

With all of this news about altered mechanics, smaller scope, and the ability to immediately play the new campaign, I could be content with just the expansion.
