Here’s what we learned about Psychonauts 2 from yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase stream.
Psychonauts 2 got a new trailer yesterday with the musical stylings of Jack Black. He was really channeling his inner Jim Morrison in the psychedelic gameplay reveal that showcased just some of Psychonauts protagonist Razputin “Raz” Aquato’s brand new powers.
While the trailer itself was a little light on details, we learned a few key pieces of info from Double Fine themselves following the show that sheds a bit more light on what we can expect in Raz’s latest adventure.
Psychonauts 2 is set to take place immediately following the events of the first Psychonauts and the 2017 virtual reality sequel, Psychonauts and the Rhombus of Ruin. Raz has ascended to become an official Psychonaut and is sent on his first mission as part of the international psychic spy agency.
And it’s a doozy. Apparently, there’s a mole within the Psychonaut ranks and Raz is tasked with finding them. And worse, he’s got a time crunch as if he doesn’t find the mole soon, they’ll release a horrible psychic monster that might destroy reality itself. No pressure.
As it turns out, Jack Black isn’t just lending his musical stylings to Psychonauts. He’s actually going to be a character too. That level where Raz is bursting his way through colorful stages and floating rainbows filled with one-eyed monsters is actually the inside of Jack Black’s brain–or at least, Jack Black’s character. He’s got information that Raz needs to find the mole, but as is usually the case with these sorts of adventure games, he needs to take a brief detour to get crucial information to track that mole down.
Psychonauts 2 will feature brand new mind powers, including the new Time Bubble ability which allows Raz to control time and space. Slow down moving objects to create platforms to jump from or freeze enemies to make them vulnerable to your powerful PSI-Blasts.
We also got an updated release window: 2021. Yes, that means Psychonauts 2 has been delayed for yet another year, but the good news is that when it does come out, it’ll be on the Xbox Series X. It’ll also make its way to the Xbox Game Pass on PC, as well as Mac, Linux, and PS4 as promised in the original Fig.co campaign.
