The Xbox Game Showcase has revealed some promising new titles for old franchises and some new fun original entries. From Psychonauts to Halo, there was enough variety for fans of various genres. Something that many players have been patiently waiting for is news from the beloved Obsidian Entertainment and the follow up to their recent hit The Outer Worlds.
Before getting to the big news, Obsidian showed off some new footage from Grounded, the upcoming title reminiscent of the classic 80s film, Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
While Grounded still looks like a fun new survival adventure, Obsidian Entertainment knew fans were waiting for an even bigger title that would satisfy those that love the developer’s fantastic grasp of the RPG genre.
In a brief reveal during the Xbox Games Showcase, fans were treated to a cinematic trailer that showcased Avowed, the new title Obsidian Entertainment has been tinkering with. The trailer had a moody medieval flair with footage of an arrow engulfed in flames traversing a battlefield and cave. Soon we shift to a first-person perspective that reveals a person wielding a sword in one hand, then what appears to be a spell being cast in the other. This unknown character is traversing a dark cave before some fire appears, and fans are left in the dark as the trailer cuts away from a significant reveal.
Are cinematic CGI cutscenes with no gameplay disappointing? Always. However, Avowed is probably in the earliest development stages, so there is not much to show yet.
Avowed is the large-scale RPG that fans were waiting for, and we can only hope Microsoft is throwing money at the team so they can create a truly unique experience. Microsoft has already dropped a ton of money to acquire the studio, so it only follows that they’ll do whats necessary to supplement Avowed development. Obsidian is no stranger to working on a shoestring budget, and we can’t wait to see what they do with the proper resources.
