Nier is a very unusual franchise. It managed to be both niche and a success, somehow balancing popular and cult at the same time. The games are appreciated on a surface level as well as widely discussed for the philosophical debates that they frequently cause. This is not something that many games can achieve and is precisely why Nier games tend to be so memorable to those who pay attention.
When Nier Reincarnation was announced, it took a lot of fans by surprise. A mobile gacha with the name Nier on it was not expected. Although the game is being played in Japan, there is a lot we don’t know about it yet. Here’s the information we have so far.
6 It Is A Free To play Mobile Game
This news caught many people by surprise. It’s safe to say that most players did not expect the Nier franchise would go to the mobile market. However, it is a Yoko Taro game, so one never really knows.
Nier Reincarnation is free to play. This follows a standard approach that companies have to the mobile games market. This model is often accompanied by loot boxes, purchasable in-game currency, and similar microtransactions. However, it is also a great opportunity for Nier fans to test the game before financially committing to it.
5 It Will Have A Gacha System
Gacha systems in videogames are not unusual nowadays and are a system that simulates the toy vending machine mechanic. Not unlike loot boxes, gacha games incentivize players to spend their money in exchange for a random in-game item. The gacha system will be how players get new items and characters and chances are, gacha will be the only way to get hold of specific things.
However, despite the backlash against gacha it isn’t always a disaster. A game that successfully implemented gacha in its system was the free-to-play Genshin Impact. So maybe Nier Reincarnation will not suffer from this model.
4 It Will Launch With A Nier: Automata Crossover
It seems that most people’s favorite androids will be back soon as Nier Reincarnation will be launched with a Nier: Automata Crossover. It is too soon to know if the crossover will be canonical or not, though. However, it is undeniable that this is a good tactic to attract the most recent fans of the franchise.
By checking the Japanese version of the game, we can see that the characters look amazing. However, the chance of getting one of the androids in the gacha system seems to be very low.
3 The Music Is Amazing
There is no denying that the music in both Nier Replicant and Nier: Automata is exceptional. Both games feel unique due to the soundtrack designed for those games. Nier Reincarnation is not different in that regard. During trailers and revealed gameplay, players can feel the game is part of the Nier franchise and much of that is thanks to the unique feel that Nier music has.
Square Enix has uploaded Nier Reincarnation music to youtube. And since the soundtrack is one of the franchise’s strong points, it makes sense they’d put some effort into getting this right. This shows that despite being a mobile game, there is a lot of production value in Reincarnation.
2 The Battle System Is Turn-Based
That is very different from how Nier games used to play before Reincarnation. However, it was expected by many. Mostly due to how hard it would be to make a decent, complex action mobile game, this might have been the safest approach. Considering that Yoko Taro is always trying to innovate somehow, there is a chance that the gameplay will have some sort of twist.
In most turn-based gacha games, characters will have different possible actions and abilities. That is what usually pushes players to invest in a gacha game. They try to make a dream team, and they need the characters to do so. It will be easier to form an opinion about it when the game is released.
1 It Is A True Sequel
This is something that was suspected already and the name should have been enough. However, the chosen platform made many players doubt it. The game is a true sequel to Nier: Automata and its predecessor, Nier Replicant. According to Yoko Taro, as the story develops, the connections between Nier Reincarnation and the previous games will be made more clear.
Humans went extinct in Nier Replicant. At the end of the game, so did the Replicants. In Nier: Automata, the androids learned that the reappearance of humans is also a lie. There were no humans nor replicants during the events of that game. There is absolutely no way to know what Nier Reincarnation will reveal and it is very exciting.
