Overwatch has a lot of in-depth lore. There are stories about what the organization Overwatch really is, about every hero’s back story and the maps dedicated to them. But regardless of the lore, Overwatch is a team-based FPS where players don’t get to feel any of that. They don’t have the in-game time to care for it.
Long time players will recognize little pieces of the puzzle, like who’s whose daughter and who’s whose mother, but there’s more than people realize. There are things like footprints, newspaper headlines, and the aftermath of the war that can be found on these maps. Each detail relates directly to different heroes’ stories in the world created by Blizzard.
10 Horizon Lunar Colony - The Escapee
All around the map of Horizon Lunar Colony can be found monkey footprints on ceilings, walls, doors, and floors. Clearly some monkey or two went loose at the facility and caused a ruckus. This is a defining point in Winston’s backstory about what really went down at the research center.
9 Horizon Lunar Colony - The Logs
What really went down at the research center was utter chaos. All the monkeys escaped and turned on their human scientists and these logs prove it. Around the map, you can find computer logs of a certain Winston speaking to other scientists about urgent matters. This Winston isn’t the monkey we know and love, but the human scientist who raised the monkey. Because of the chaos that happened and the death of the scientists, the monkey we know took on the name Winston in remembrance.
8 Kings Row - Viva La Revolution
Kings Row places heroes in the backstreets of a London neighborhood. Part of Overwatch history is the political controversies regarding Omnics, or robots, versus humans. Many humans think Omnics are not worthy of rights and should remain servants regardless of their autonomy. The graffiti and littered signs around Kings Row tell us that the people of London are not in favor of Omnics and that there are therefore probably no robots in London or England.
7 Temple Of Anubis - Breaking News
There are scattered newspapers left on the floors at Temple of Anubis. If you look closely, these newspapers might make a part of your brain light up with questions.
The headline says “Global hacking spree.” Now who do we know and love that does quite a bit of hacking? Sombra went across the world hacking everyone from your mother to the president and causing mayhem, but the real question is for what cause? What was she looking for exactly?
6 Paris - Secret Omnic Society
Kings Row is no safe place for the likes of Omnics such as Zenyatta or Orisa. But where is a safe place exactly? Graffiti art and certain suspicious doors on the Paris map suggest that there might be such a place in France. Near the beginning of the attacking side, there are paintings of Omnics with masks on and then a strange door with a security camera and the words, “Nous vous surveillons” above it. This means, “We are watching you.” Perhaps these are a group of Omnics planning an uprising?
5 Busan - Power Rangers Who?
D.Va is one of the most iconic heroes in the game. From the way other heroes, most especially Lucio, talk with her in-game we can put together that she’s pretty famous for kicking ass both in real battle and in video games. D.Va is put on the cover of magazines and soda cans. But what does she really do that makes her so famous? Well, she was in the army of course! D.Va belonged to a special South Korean force tasked with protecting the nation. This special force looks pretty epic, each having a coordinated color to their mech.
4 Chateau Guillard - The Emails
Widowmaker is a mysterious woman. She keeps to herself and doesn’t say much in-game that reveals anything about her character. Creeping through her emails might give us some insight, though. On the Deathmatch map Chateau Guillard, one of the only real rooms is a study containing a laptop on a desk. This laptop has an email open and written in French. See if you can translate it and figure out any secrets.
3 Hanamura - The Infamous Battle
It’s no secret that Genji and Hanzo are brothers by blood. There was a notorious fight between them where Hanzo was tasked to kill his own brother. He succeeded, somewhat, and forever felt guilty.
This fight put a damper on Hanamura’s decor. Arrows and ninja stars can be found at the shrine, traces of the brothers, and their misfortune. The bell on the first capture point also has two dragons encrusted onto showcasing harmony as they engulf each other. This represents Hanzo and Genji, as they both wield dragon powers.
2 Necropolis - Ana’s Sweet Reminder
Ana has been a noble part of multiple organizations, being a trusted and talented sniper. The Arena map of Necropolis is seen as one of her bases. In a lower area can be found her sniper and sniper parts, indicating it is indeed Ana who has been working out of that space. Out the back door is a little secret though. In between the back stairs are three family photos and a tiny hologram of a little girl. This hits home for players as they realize that little girl is Ana’s daughter, Pharah.
1 Temple Of Anubis - Sniper Wanted
The Temple of Anubis is one of Ana and Pharah’s map, being Egyptian and all. Around the map, there are papers glued to the walls that look much like wanted posters. These papers are written in Arabic with a hefty price smacked at the bottom. The image can be what only looks like Ana in her full attire. Ana was a loyal member of the army, so why there would be a wanted poster of her peaks an interest and leaves things to be discovered.
