Items are an essential part of any Soulslike title, and Mortal Shell is certainly not an exception. However, Mortal Shell’s item system is unique because you don’t know exactly what that item will do before using it, leading to fascinating discoveries or even deadly ones.
Every consumable item serves a vital role in Mortal Shell, and additionally, you can build up your familiarity with every consumable in the game if you use them enough. Building up your understanding of an item will increase its potency and benefit the player in various ways, and can even help shift the tide of battle in your favor.
Weltcap
Weltcaps will likely be the first item you stumble upon in Mortal Shell and will also be your primary source of healing for most of the game.
The Weltcap can heal for up to 40 health over 60 seconds, and when you reach max familiarity with it, the timespan is significantly shorter.
Roasted Rat
The Roasted Rat will eventually replace Weltcaps as your primary healing item as they are relatively cheap to buy from a vendor named Vlas for only 100 Tar.
The Roasted Rat can heal the player for 35 health over a 10 second period. However, those who max its familiarity will receive 45 health, making it a better choice when compared to the Weltcaps.
Baguette
The Baguette is a healing item, but there isn’t a hard number to go along with it. There aren’t many of them in the world, so it isn’t the best.
The Baguette will give the player a small health boost, and when at max familiarity, it will give the player “more health when sinking their teeth into this wholesome treat.” Weird!
Mango
Like the Baguette, the Mango doesn’t offer much information on exactly how much health it gives to the player. It is also equally just as rare to find out in the world as well.
The Mango only offers a small boost to the player’s health and, when at max familiarity, is even more delicious. Whatever that means.
Rotten Food
Rotten Food also restores health to the player, and the exact numbers on it are unknown.
However, Rotten Food initially takes a heavy toll on the player’s resolve in trade for a small health boost. Unfortunately, even at max familiarity, the Rotten Food still only replenishes a minimal amount of health, just with less of a toll on your resolve.
Boiled Frog
The Boiled Frog is an incredibly unique item that is beneficial to the player at pretty much any stage of familiarity.
The Boiled Frog will significantly increase your stamina recovery speed for 3 minutes. Additionally, if you reach max familiarity with it, the effects of the Boiled From will last for 5 minutes.
Tarspore
The Tarspore is a fascinating consumable and can be potentially deadly to newcomers, especially since it’s a mushroom. But, unfortunately, it is the exact opposite of the Weltcap.
Until you reach max familiarity with the Tarspore, you will take 40 poison damage for 16 seconds. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Upon reaching max familiarity with the Tarspore, you will be immune to poison for 2 minutes, making the Tarspore one of the most useful items in the game.
Etherial Diapason
The Etherial Diapason is another useful item that players should grow accustomed to, especially towards the later portions of the game.
The Etherial Diapason allows players to restore their ability to reclaim their shell whenever they die. When at max familiarity, players will also gain resolve. The Etherial Diapason is essential for staying alive in challenging encounters.
Simple Lute
The Simple Lute is a rather strange item, but it is sure fun to play, especially when looking for bloodlust.
The Simple Lute allows you to lure in enemies within a pretty small radius. However, when you max the lute out, you will attract enemies from a great distance. “The audacity,” as the game says.
Tainted Nektar
The name “Tainted Nektar” should be taken at face value because it is not worth using at all. Not even at max familiarity.
The Tainted Nektar will rend the player from their shell, causing them to lose the ability to reclaim it. At max familiarity, the Tainted Nektar will grant to play precisely one drop of tar. That’s it. Please, avoid this item.
Untarnished Mask
The Untarnished Mask is useful in dire situations and is essentially a “get out of jail free card” for the player.
This mask allows you to warp to Sester Ganessa. At max familiarity, the player will also gain resolve for using the Untarnished Mask. Overall, this item is useful for getting out of a sticky situation!
Bronze Bell
There are very few items dedicated to farming in Mortal Shell. Fortunately, the Bronze bell is one of those items!
The Bronze Bell will give the player a 10% bonus to Tar gain for 6 minutes. Additionally, at max familiarity, players will also receive a 10% bonus for a chance of enemies dropping Glimpses. The Bronze Bell is excellent for late-game farming!
Golden Bell
The Golden Bell is also a valuable item, but maybe less so than the Bronze Bell. Oddly enough.
The Golden Bell will grant players increased resolve gain for three minutes. When at max familiarity, the bell’s effects will last longer.
Inferior Moonshine
Drinking the Inferior Moonshine can prove deadly to many newcomers in Mortal Shell. It may look like a healing item, but this moonshine is quite the opposite.
The Inferior Moonshine will give players a small amount of resolve but at the cost of their health. Even at max familiarity, the Inferior Moonshine also provides a small amount of resolve but only with less of a blow to your health. This item can prove useful in some situations, but not most.
Superior Moonshine
Drinking the Superior Moonshine is, well, superior!
The Superior Moonshine grants players a large amount of resolve with no blowback to their health. You gain even more resolve once reaching max familiarity as well. Again, with no effect on your health!
Mortal Token
The Mortal Token is a fantastic item and is beneficial to the player in many situations. Especially in a tight pinch where you need a bit more health.
Using the Mortal Token will allow players to convert the damage taken into health gained while hardened. At max familiarity with the Mortal Token, you will receive more health. This token can help the player out when they exhausted their healing items and need a quick “pick me up.”
Ornate Token
Like the Mortal Token, the Ornate Token is also beneficial to the player but, perhaps, to a broader degree.
The Ornate Token grants a buff that will reduce the damage of the next hit you take after getting struck in hardened mode. However, at max familiarity, you will receive no damage the next time you get hit. This token is handy for boss fights or more formidable foes.
Spectral Token
On par with the last two tokens, the Spectral Token offers a great buff that is nothing but beneficial to the player.
The Spectral Token will grant players a damage boost on their next attack after getting struck in hardened mode. Additionally, when at max familiarity, the Spectral Token will give a more potent attack boost.
Scripture Of Ardor
Scriptures are familiar to the Tokens found in Mortal Shell, except they grant a bonus upon a successful parry rather than getting struck while hardened.
The Scripture of Ardor will poison the enemy on a successful parry attack. Furthermore, the potency of the poison gets increased when reaching max familiarity with the scripture.
Scripture Of Defiance
To successfully parry, you will need resolve, which is what makes this scripture fantastic.
The Scripture of Defiance will refund your resolve on the next successful parry. With max familiarity, the scripture will grant even more resolve.
Scripture Of Despair
Much like the Spectral Token, this scripture is a great item to utilize whenever you need to deal a little extra damage.
The Scripture of Despair will grant bonus damage on your next attack. Maxing out the familiarity of the scripture will increase the damage even more.
Scripture Of Euphoria
Similar to the Mortal Token, this scripture can help get you out of a tight situation.
The Scripture of Euphoria will grant the player health on the next successful parry. If you max out the scripture’s familiarity, you will receive more health back.
Scripture Of Repent
This scripture is an incredibly unique one and can shift the tides of battle significantly.
On the next successful parry, the Scripture of Repent will set the attacker on fire. Maxing out the familiarity with the scripture will increase the duration and damage of the burn.
Effigy Of Eredrim
Effigies are an incredible item that can help the player out tremendously in Mortal Shell, especially if they need to approach the situation differently.

Tarnished Mask
The Tarnished mask is a great way to get out of trouble, but it comes at a high cost.
Using the Tarnished Mask, you will get warped back to Sester Genessa and lost all of your Glimpses. However, upon reaching max familiarity with the mask, it will only cost half your Glimpses. The Tarnished Mask is also an unlimited use item!
Ornate Mask
This mask is potentially the best item in Mortal Shell and can get purchased for 30 Glimpses from Sester Ganessa.
The Ornate Mask allows you to astral travel between Sesters, essentially unlocking fast travel. When at max familiarity, you will also gain additional tar for 1 minute after using it. The Ornate Mask is also an unlimited use item!
Sester’s Binding
The Sester’s Binding is also an unlimited use item that can help you out in various situations.
Using Sester’s Binding will switch out your current weapon to the Hammer and Chisel, making it useful for upgrading weapons or fighting specific foes.

Playing the Impervious Lute will attract enemies to your position from a small radius. However, if you have max familiarity with the lute, you will be able to attract foes from a much farther range.
Tools
Key Items are essential items found within the world of Mortal Shell. They can upgrade your weapons, your Seal, and create the only ranged weapon in the game.
The Tools can be used to repair and obtain the Ballistazooka weapon along with 5x Large Bolts. You can purchase the Tools from the merchant Vlas for 8,000 Tar.
