The Epic Games reveal of their demo for the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 was impressive, but surprising that the majority of gameplay was run on hardware for the Sony PlayStation 5 and not Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.

Speaking with VentureBeat, Tim Sweeney was open about the long-standing relationship they had with Sony. Apparently, the new engine’s development on the PlayStation 5 had been active for an indeterminate, but long time. While the news does seem to favor one console over the other, Epic CTO Kim Libreri was quick to point out that “the future is very bright for gamers, and anybody using our engine for any application.”

Sweeny was especially impressed with the SSD that Sony is providing in its next generation of console, because the older style was one of the single largest hurdles to surpass when attempting to create truly immersive games. Sweeny stated, “If you look at previous generations, you had to deal with magnetic disks, the lowest common denominator…our aim for the next generation is nothing but seamless, continuous worlds.”

While the move is a bit of a snub towards Microsoft, it is probably only a short-term consideration that will soon be forgotten. If the claims about Unreal Engine 5 are true, we can expect to see some beautiful games arriving in the future.
