The battle royale style game simply features 100 players dropping into an expansive map with nothing but an axe to swing, and they all fight until only one person remains.

You can pay money in order to attain yourself a battle pass and kit out your avatar, however, everything you spend your real life money on will be purely aesthetic. You can by yourself a new dance move to taunt your slain opponents, but nothing that will help you achieve what comes before that or give you a competitive edge.
You would think that with the game being free, Epic wouldn’t be the most affluent gaming company in the world. Well, that’s where you’d be wrong. The masterminds behind Fortnite announced this week that they will be providing $100 million to fund prize pools for upcoming Fortnite competitions. That’s right folks, $100 million in prize money up for grabs just for being good at Fortnite.
The most recent limited time mode featured on Fortnite actually foreshadowed this announcement somewhat. The mode was dubbed “Solo Showdown”, and it was the first time that the game featured a regularly updated leaderboard with V-Bucks, Fortnite’s in-game currency, up for grabs for those who finished in the top 100 once the LTM came to an end.
The world of esports is continually growing and it only makes sense that the hottest game at the moment capitalizes on that. According to their statement though, Epic want to approach it in a different way to other gaming companies. They “plan to be more inclusive, and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game”, so perhaps even those of us who aren’t so great at the game will have the opportunity to win a little cash too.
