The Epic Games Store just added mod support as one of its long-promised features to make it more competitive with Steam.

No sooner than we get achievements in Ark: Survival Evolved than Epic comes back with another feature that has long been on the “to-do” list: mod support. Mods are those things that PC gamers continually chide console gamers over for not having, and until recently, Steam users chided Epic users over for the same reason.

But now that they’re getting mod support, even Epic users can swap the dragons in Skyrim with Thomas the Tank Engine models. Or at least, they would if you could get Skyrim on the Epic Games Store.

Only one game on the EGS will have mod support to start and that’s MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Mods were always a big part of MechWarrior 5’s plan and up until just yesterday, your only option to actually download and install mods was using a third-party site like Nexus Mods. With the newly enacted mods page on the Epic Games Store, you can quickly and easily browse compatible mods and have them both automatically install and update along with MechWarrior 5.

Some of the currently available mods can drastically improve your MechWarrior 5 experience. The TTRulez enemy and lancemate AI mods will make it so your teammates and opponents stop mindlessly driving into walls, while the Enhanced and 3D HUD mods will make it really seem like you’re fighting in a futuristic giant robot.

Other mods completely change the way MechWarrior 5 is played. The MW5: Mercs Reloaded mod adds new ‘Mechs, new missions, and vastly improves ‘Mech customization, while the MechCommander Mercenaries mod changes MechWarrior 5 from a first-person ‘Mech simulator to a third-person ‘Mech RTS game along the lines of the original MechCommander game that came out over 20 years ago.

Epic will use MechWarrior 5 as their testbed for mod support, ensuring that all their systems work correctly before rolling it out to other games that are still awaiting mod support.
