Epic has announced Alan Wake and For Honor will be free to download on the Epic Games Store, beginning in August.
Epic recently revealed it will be offering a free new game on its digital storefront every week for the remainder of 2019. However, this will only be the second time ever the company will be dropping two free games in a single week.
You can download both titles from August 2 at 11 AM ET/8 AM PT through August 9 at 11 AM ET/8 AM PT, according to Epic Games’ Twitter account. Alan Wake, developed by Remedy Entertainment, first released for as an Xbox 360 exclusive back in 2010. Meanwhile, Ubisoft’s multiplayer-focused For Honor came out in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
While you patiently wait to get your hands on Alan Wake and For Honor, indie titles This War of Mine and Moonlighter are currently available for free until August 2. Epic recently explained in a blog post why it’s suddenly offering two free games, clarifying that whenever an M-rated title is chosen as the weekly free game, Epic will also offer another title that’s more accessible to younger players.
In this case, This War of Mine is an M-rated look at the impact war has on innocent citizens, while Moonlighter is an upbeat action RPG about an adventurous shopkeeper who wants to become a hero. Similarly, the atmospheric Alan Wake is a T-rated title while For Honor is rated M for mature. Remedy’s next upcoming game is Control, which is set to launch in late August, while For Honor continues to receive new add-on content and improvements. You can grab the free games by heading over to the Epic Games Store homepage.
Epic offering an extra free title for younger gamers certainly makes sense and is quite considerate. However, plenty of players and developers still have their issues with the company’s online store. Specifically, the aggressive tactics and exclusivity deals Epic is using to become a better alternative to Steam.
Epic entices game developers by offering only to take 12% of the profits instead of the 30% that Steam currently takes. This has led to upcoming titles such as Shenmue 3 and Borderlands 3 to become Epic Games Store exclusives, which has understandably angered fans. Whether or not the free games Epic will continue to offer on its storefront will be enough to satiate players remains to be seen.
