Envy Gaming, owner and operator of franchise Team Envy, the Dallas Fuel for Overwatch, the Dallas Empire Team in the Call of Duty League, and founding member of FLASHPOINT, is reportedly preparing for multiple changes to its CS:GO roster.
Multiple sources that are familiar with the team and its activities say that there are no firm details in place as of yet, but two players are expected to be replaced, at least. The current speculation on the matter is that Ryan “ryann” Welsh will be replaced, and likely one of either Michał “MICHU” Müller or Buğra “Calyx” Arkin, thought all three could also go.
Replacing all three players however would be rather extreme as the team could reset its entire point progression in the standing for the Road to Rio tournament. Replacing only two players would result in a 40% penalty, which is far more manageable in terms of maintaining any hope at progression this year.
With that said, Envy has had a rough year, to put it lightly. MICHU, Calyx, and Kaleb “moose” Jayne are new additions to the team from this year, but the team has failed to perform in any notable way. As a founding member of FLASHPOINT, the team placed 11 by the end of the first season. Their second state of the Road to Rio tournament could not have gone worse, with the team placing dead last.
Now, the team is sitting in ninth place in the Road to Rio standings, and since the top five teams move forward, it is not out of the realm of possibility for a comeback. However, that forfeiture of all the points with a larger roster replacement would drop them to 11th place, from which it would be impossible to advance as per the available points remaining to be claimed.
Performance may not be the only issues, however, as the pandemic affects the composition of the team as well. Since May, both MICHU and Calyx have been back home in Europe, and it must be difficult to coordinate with their USA counterparts in a meaningful way.
For now, we can only wait and see what will happen with Envy, but given how competitive the highest levels of CS:GO are and demand only excellence, the underperformance of the team can only be tolerated for so long. If the plan is to simply abandon progression for the Road to Rio, there is no reason to maintain any of the team for now, and rebuilding might be the best option.
