Singer Grimes and Entrepreneur and Tesla Founder Elon Musk have welcomed their first child into the world. However, as is typically the case with Musk, there is a lot of discussion around the baby’s name. Specifically, no one knows how to pronounce the baby’s name or what it means.
Grimes and Musk welcomed their son on May 4th and later revealed that his name is X Æ A-12. Some initially took this to be one of Musk’s usual jokes, but neither Grimes nor the Tesla founder have said otherwise.
As one might expect, it wasn’t long before people started making memes about the name choice. There were questions about how to pronounce his name, what it means, and even some doubts about whether he is human (kidding, of course).
While the parents have yet to reveal how to pronounce their son’s name, Grimes did shed some light on the choice. Apparently, each element of the name has some significance for the two, and could hint at what they will eventually call the baby. Note: Grimes likely means the SR-71 Blackbird and not SR-17.
Others question whether X Æ A-12, where the child was born. It’s possible that this is the name that Grimes and Musk recognize for their son, but they could have put something different on the birth certificate.
For Musk it’s just another opportunity to be in the news, after generating a lot of attention with his choice of Deus Ex’s hero has his social media avatar. Maybe this will take some of the attention off the bad press that he has been receiving, and instead lead to attempts to decode how to pronounce the baby’s name.
