Earth Defense Force is heading West in 2021. Yes, even that weird voxel-based spin-off we saw a few weeks ago.
Early 2021. That’s when we can expect to see a release of Earth Defense Force: World Brothers in North America and Europe, according to a recent trailer that was broadcast during GameSpot’s Play For All stream yesterday. This is exciting news for Earth Defense Force fans that might have been concerned about the franchise staying in Japan for years before finally getting regional localizations.
We found out about Earth Defense Force 6 last month, the latest iteration of the mainline Earth Defense Force games, but Earth Defense Force: World Brothers is a completely new take on the old formula. Everything is re-made in block voxels making it look more like Roblox than an Earth Defense Force game–at least until you get the action. Then it’s most definitely an EDF game.
For those new to the franchise, Earth Defense Force is a co-op third-person shooter where you defend the Earth from invading bug-like aliens. The series has since branched out to include other forms of aliens, like Kaiju and three-legged walkers, but the primary opponent is still giant bugs.
World Brothers takes that formula and puts it in a box. The Earth has been reduced to a cube and then shattered into a million pieces, with each city its own floating island realm. Somehow, the Earth Defense Force must figure out how to both halt the invading aliens and glue Earth back together.
There will be a roster of 100 characters, and just as many skills, monsters, and weapons to equip. The recent trailer also confirms there will be neat little costumes too, such as a ninja, cowboy, or pharaoh costume.
Earth Defense Force: World Brothers has been confirmed for release in Japan in 2020 for Nintendo Switch and PS4, while the Western release will be in early 2021. Earth Defense Force 6 has been confirmed for a 2021 release window and will likely hit the PlayStation 5.
