Over the past few days, tons of news has begun surfacing about Square Enix’s highly-anticipated first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. This year’s E3 thus far has provided fans with an extensive look at the game’s combat, the reveals of beloved characters, and even a release date. If news about the future of this ambitious, episodic approach to the lore of Final Fantasy VII is anything worth noting, fans will have much to look forward to for a very long time.
It may seem early to start thinking about what future episodes of Final Fantasy VII Remake will offer, but in an interview with Producer Yoshinori Kitase, it was stated each episode of the game would comparable content to a standalone Final Fantasy game. It’s worth noting that during Square Enix’s E3 press conference, it was mentioned the first episode will be released across two Blu-ray discs. Part One of Final Fantasy VII Remake retells the first portion of the original game’s story within the metropolis of Midgar, however plans to go much deeper into the characters and backstory of this portion of the 1997 JRPG’s lore.
Details on what Square Enix plans to allow players to do within Midgar has yet to be revealed. In the original Final Fantasy 7, Midgar is separated in eight different districts, however not every one of them was accessible. This could mean more, if not the entirety of Midgar will be available for players to explore, which opens up the possibility of introducing new characters, more side quests, and adding more narrative bits within the known plot of the original game.
While Square Enix’s extensive look at Final Fantasy 7 Remake gave those eager for its release much to be excited for, it appears the first part of the remake intends to just scratch the surface for what the developer plans going forward. As of now, there’s no indication of how many parts Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be broken into.
With the small amount of the original game’s story that’s being covered in the first part, coupled with the ambition to create future parts on a scale as large as what Square Enix is planning, the entirety of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has the potential offer hundreds of hours worth of playable content, even if it’ll take a long time for it all to release.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake releases on March 3rd, 2020 for PlayStation 4.
