If the low price and loving update weren’t good enough reasons to grab Command & Conquer Remastered, this latest bit of news might put you over the edge. In a post on Reddit today, C&C Remastered lead producer Jim Vessella revealed that EA will be releasing the source code for both the original game and Red Alert alongside this new port.
What that basically means is mod support just got a whole lot simpler to implement. One of the reasons that the Command & Conquer series has prospered without another entry is because of how forward-thinking original developer Westwood Studios was. By allowing for mod support in the original game, the company extended the shelf life well beyond the 90s.
With Remastered looking to remain as faithful as possible to the original releases, the source code will ensure that all of your favorite mods will make the jump to the glorious 4K future. As Vessella put it, " It’s worth noting this initiative is the direct result of a collaboration between some of the community council members and our teams at EA. After discussing with the council members, we made the decision to go with the GPL license to ensure compatibility with projects like CnCNet and Open RA."
To jumpstart this new mod support, Remastered developer Petroglyph created something called the “Nuke Tank” mod. The idea was to pose a hypothetical question: “What would the Brotherhood of Nod do if they captured the Mammoth Tank?” Obviously, the answer is to create what might as well be Metal Gear.
Both the Origin and Steam releases of Command & Conquer Remastered will feature mod support. The Steam version, in particular, will have Steam Workshop integration to make mods even easier to install. You’ll simply subscribe to anything you find interesting and Steam will automatically download it for you. On Origin, it will more closely resemble how older PC games handled mods.
This may not be entirely new content for the re-release, but it is a very welcomed addition that should extend the life of Command & Conquer for another few decades. If you’re somehow dissatisfied with what Remastered has, why not make your own campaign? It’ll be simple enough.
