EA Play Live 2020 was full of great announcements from new EA Originals like Lost in Random and It Takes Two to the reveal that years of internet comments have finally willed Skate 4 into existence. EA Play Live primarily focused on new games releasing in 2020; however, EA teased a number of big games are currently in development for next-generation consoles from popular franchises including Need for Speed, Battlefield, and Dragon Age.
EA’s Chief Studio Officer Laura Miele took a moment toward the end of the show to announce that EA is hard at work on “new stories, new experiences, and new gameplay” for next-generation consoles including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While no games were officially revealed, new concept art and pre-production gameplay was shown from multiple AAA studios including BioWare, DICE, Criterion, and Motive.
Based on the footage shown, it’s not difficult to guess what some of these games might be. Footage was shown for what are clearly new entries in franchises like Need for Speed, Dragon Age, and Battlefield. Criterion’s next game is said to offer new levels of seamless immersion that will put players into a race in a matter of seconds, BioWare is developing a new fantasy world it wants to make the players reality with immersive next-gen technology, and DICE is working on multiplayer battles on a scale and fidelity level never seen before. Finally, Motive is developing a “highly ambitious, innovative new game” that puts power and creativity in the hands of the player.
Unfortunately, while EA named a bunch of prestigious studios that are working on brand new games for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the announcements stopped there. Based on the presentation, fans already know about the majority of EA games releasing throughout the rest of the year including Star Wars: Squadrons, FIFA 21, Madden 21, and Rocket Arena.
While it’s still possible the rumored Mass Effect trilogy remake could be announced soon, it’s going to be a little while longer before we really see what BioWare, DICE, Criterion, and Motive are currently working on.
