When EA announced that Star Wars: Squadrons is $39.99 at launch, fans sensed a disturbance in the force. However, that reading might be incorrect. Despite it being based on a huge franchise, EA is willing to go with different pricing models with its games.

“Games all have different scales and most of our games right now have huge scale,” said Chief Operating Officer Blake Jorgensen in a financial earnings call, according to VG 24/7. EA opted for a smaller scale project with Montreal’s Motive at the helm, as opposed to the massive undertaking that Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and the Star Wars Battlefront games gave its teams.

According to Jorgensen, the game was made from consumer feedback, who said that they wanted to be able to fly an X-Wing or TIE fighter in a dogfight. He said, “It doesn’t have the breadth of some of our games but it is still an incredible game and so that’s why we chose to price it at a slightly lower level to also allow access to as many people as possible who had that Star Wars fantasy.” EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson later added it “a very deep and immersive game.”

With huge games like Star Wars, FIFA, and Madden under its wing, it’s easy to ignore some of EA’s other franchises. While the news of a lower priced game from EA seemed shocking at first, Jorgensen did point out that the Plants vs. Zombies third-person shooter games have been released at a lower price too. This was because it wasn’t as fully featured as their other titles and it could be accessible for a younger audience.

Star Wars Squadrons seems like a feature-packed game from the outside looking in. There will be a story mode campaign that will give you two perspectives from the New Republic and the Empire, cross-play, VR compatibility for PC and PSVR pilots, and a comprehensive 5v5 multiplayer mode with different roles for team members. It also might give you a nostalgia rush as Motive is dedicated to replicating the 70s look of each ship’s cockpit.

The game will be releasing for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 2 with no plans as of yet for a next-gen upgrade. If you pre-order the game, you will get a bunch of aesthetic extras for both the New Republic and the Imperial factions. They include an epic flight suit, rare Starfighter skins, and common decals.

While it may sound like there will be in-game purchases from these pre-order bonuses, EA has claimed there will be no micro-transactions for Star Wars Squadrons.
