It’s hard to believe, but the Dynasty Warriors series is now 20 years old. Appearing on multiple generations of consoles since the PS1, the series has morphed from being a generic fighting game to a wild power fantasy and remains one of the few series to embrace thousands of NPCs on screen at once. After teasing something big back in February of this year, series producer Akihiro Suzuki dropped some hints that multiple games will be coming this year.
In the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Suzuki was interviewed about what Koei Tecmo and Omega Force have in mind for the continuation of the series. The last main entry, Dynasty Warriors 9, was a colossal failure and turned many off from the previously consistent games. While musing that many expected a traditional Musou game, Suzuki stated, “I think we may have derived and broadened our range too much on the challenge.”
Still, the developers aren’t ready to give up on the open-world concept just yet. “Perhaps the Open World system won’t be adopted in future numbered titles,” Suzuki says, “but it is the best method to pull out the appeal of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Although I still don’t know yet what kind of title it will be like, I want to try making it once more.”
To that end, it seems like Omega Force is conceiving a Dynasty Warriors 9-II in a similar vein to Samurai Warriors 4-II. That will, hopefully, be a refinement of the things that did work in 9 and an evolution of all the systems that flopped. I do still think an open-world game set in this time period is a solid idea, but nothing about Omega Force’s attempt felt polished or enjoyable.
If a massive, barren map isn’t your thing, at least there isn’t going to be just one new game for the 20th anniversary. “I hope we can announce the 20th-anniversary celebration titles soon. By the way, there is not just one title to celebrate it,” Suzuki mentions. That sounds like a teaser for Dynasty Warriors 10 if I do say so myself. It certainly isn’t an Xtreme Legends expansion, since Suzuki shot down the idea of that happening for 9.
In other news related to the series, the previously announced and teased film has finished production. Revealed back in 2018, Suzuki claims he has seen an advanced screening and believes fans will be happy with the movie. “It’s a wonderful movie and is totally a Musou.”
