Dungeons & Dragons is a vast universe with plenty of options and freedom to play interesting and unique characters. But creating a powerful character requires experience and familiarity with a lot of rules and options. One of those options is picking up the best feat for the character in certain levels.
This can be an intimidating task, considering how many different feats are available across different sourcebooks. Spellcasters have a lot of options to consider. While some feats such as Spell Sniper might be very situational, there are feats that spellcaster classes across the board can take advantage of in most situations.
10 Elemental Adept
Spellcasters that focus on dealing certain types of elemental damage, such as sorcerers, wizards, and even some clerics, can take advantage of this feat. The Elemental Adept will empower the caster’s damage with one type of elemental energy.
Not only will this feat allows the caster to ignore damage resistances of the chosen type, but it will also count every dice roll of 1 as 2, increasing the damage potential of spells that use multiple dice such as the iconic Fireball.
9 Inspiring Leader
A lot of spellcasters such as sorcerer, warlock, paladin, and the unique and powerful bard, use Charisma as their primary spellcasting ability. Since these characters are often pushed toward being the leader of the group, the Inspiring Leader feat will be a good choice for them, both thematically and mechanically.
By using this feat, the caster can spend 10 minutes to basically give a pep talk to the party, inspiring them, and giving them temporary hit points equal to the caster’s level plus their Charisma modifier.
8 Metamagic Adept
While sorcerers are usually a glass cannon, with a lot of potential damage output but low survivability, by picking this feat, other casters can get access to one of the sorcerer’s most powerful features.
Metamagic Adept will give the caster the choice of two metamagic options from the sorcerer class, and two sorcery points between each long rest. Most casters can benefit greatly from quickened spell or twinned spell, and even the sorcerers themselves can pick this feat to get access to more metamagic options and sorcery points.
7 Ritual Caster
While every class — even non-casters — can benefit from this feat, it can be very useful to spellcasters. By having a spellbook dedicated to powerful ritual spells such as Detect Magic and Identify, the caster can forgo learning or preparing those spells, and free up their limited number of spells known or prepared for other spells that don’t have the ritual casting property.
The Ritual Caster feat will give the character a spellbook containing two ritual spells of 1st level. They can also add more ritual spells to the book later if they find a scroll or a wizard’s spellbook.
6 Telekinetic
This feat from the most recent Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, increases the character’s Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score by one, and gives them access to the mage hand cantrip, and some extra features for the spell if they already have the cantrip.
The feat increases the range of Mage Hand by 30 feet and gives the caster the option to push or shove creatures with it using only a bonus action. It’s a great utility for an already useful cantrip.
5 Telepathic
Like Telekinetic, this feat from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything also increases your Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score by one. In addition, the character can telepathically communicate with any creature in a 60 feet radius.
The feat also lets the character cast the Detect Thought spell without using a spell slot or material component once a day. Having access to extra and free spells is a very powerful option for a spellcaster, a feature that this feat and the next two entries on this list will offer.
4 Shadow Touched
This unique feat from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is full of flavor and powerful features. In addition to increasing one of the Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma scores by one, the character gets access to the Invisibility spell and another 1st level spell of their choice from the illusion or necromancy school, and they can cast them once a day, without using a spell slot or material components.
There are great options to choose from like Inflict Wounds, Disguise Self, or Silent Image, and in addition to casting them for free once a day, the caster can cast them again using their normal spell slots if they need to.
3 Fey Touched
If the character has been influenced by the unique magic of the Feywilds, Fey Touched from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is a great feat for them. This feat gives the character a point increase in their Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score, and gives them access to Misty Step and another 1st level spell of their choice from the divination or enchantment school.
Identify, Charm Person, or Command are great options to have as free spells once a day. And, as with Shadow Touched, these spells can be cast more than once a day if the caster chooses to spend a spell slot for them.
2 Resilient
Most spellcaster classes suffer from low defenses and survivability. Resilient is an excellent feat for remedying this shortcoming. Classes that don’t have proficiency in Constitution saving throws, can get this feat to increase their Constitution score by one, possibly increasing their hit points, and getting proficiency in this saving throw, which is crucial for keeping concentration on spells.
In addition, sorcerers who already have proficiency in Constitution saving throws, can increase their Dexterity and gain proficiency in that saving throw instead. This can possibly increase their armor class, and give them a better chance against area-of-effect spells that require Dexterity saving throws.
1 War Caster
The one feat that every caster should consider is War Caster. This feat is very powerful for every spellcaster, and even half-casters such as paladins or rangers can use this feat to great effect.
War Caster lets the character perform the somatic components of the spell even if they don’t have a free hand. It will let the character cast a spell instead of opportunity attacks. And the most important feature is that it will give the character advantage on Constitution saving throws required to keep concentration on spells.
