Chests are built using 3 pieces of wood. This can be easily gathered by destroying trees, which are found in abundance throughout the game.
How To Get A Pot In Dragon Quest Builders 2
Pots are made using one block of spoiled soil and one piece of oil. Spoiled soil can be most commonly found in Furrowfield, so take the ship there to quickly get some. It is easily noticeable, as it will be much darker than grass.
Oil can be retrieved by killing blue slimes, which roam most islands. These are very easy to kill, so you don’t need to prepare for a tough fight.

Haystacks are made using 3 pieces of wheat. That means you need to collect some wheat that you have grown from a nearby field.
By the time that you unlock the Barn recipe, you should already have some wheat growing, so come back after a short while and it should be fully grown.
