The brand new DLC for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, A New Power Awakens, has now come and gone. The 250 power level of Beerus made him a worthy adversary, with his Sphere of Destruction and Beerus Ball now being two of the most annoying attacks in the game. But, what now— or, more accurately, what next? Bandai Namco’s current Season Pass reveals yet another thrilling boss battle, which is hopefully Zamasu and Goku Black or even Golden Frieza, followed by a vague New Story Arc.
While some believe, with good reason, that the forthcoming DLC will reveal Broly, a large-scale battle royale in the likeness of Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power would give fans that extra dose of action needed for long-term playability.
A Ring Full of Challenges
The Tournament of Power was, in both the manga and anime, very similar to any modern battle royale, with the exception of a 48-minute timer in place of an ever-closing safe zone. The best fighters from eight universes are literally put through the wringer, with teams of ten clashing at full power. Whichever universe survived with the most fighters at the end of the tournament claimed victory. Of course, it ended with far more intrigue, but given the DLC’s alterations on the origins of Super Saiyan God, it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities for Bandai to adapt the Tournament of Power a tad differently.
Akin to areas outside of the main map, such as the Sacred World of the Kai and King Kai’s Planet, the Null Realm could act as home to a PvE battle royale mode. It can be structured with a timer along with several challenges for the player to beat, in addition to an onslaught of powerful NPCs surging upon the Z-warriors. The player could be one solo character with three separate teams of three, each of which can be joined at critical points in the match, whether it be for combat assistance or healing a comrade. For endgame replayability, a recurring visit to the battle royale would be extremely fun and interesting, allowing players to buff up their favorite characters in various ways and on a consistent basis.
Choose Your Fighters
The ring is set and the countdown is mere moments from starting… who’s on your squad? Instead of the official narrative taking reign, players could potentially have the option of choosing their three trios and solo characters. It would elevate the series and change the way battle royales can be played, blending together games like Jump Force and Warzone. The evolved format of the mode may attract audiences unaccustomed to a battle royale and possibly even those who aren’t fans of the franchise.
Suppose the Story DLC also introduces new playable characters. The addition of Future Trunks and Majin Buu, both primed to be swapped in the tournament over Tien and Krillin if you so choose, would bolster that add-on by a huge margin. Fans of Dragon Ball Super would even get a chance to fight against some of their favorite characters from the various universes and learn more about them.
Two Words: Ultra Instinct
Capping off the game’s Season Pass (if these DLC additions are the final updates to the game), a Tournament of Power Battle Royale would give players one of the most powerful and interesting transformations in the franchise. Goku’s Ultra Instinct was learned and developed during the tournament, lending him the upper hand against Jiren. It not only encompasses his frame in a silver glow but gives him an eye into the future, dodging incoming attacks without thinking. The form is being added to FighterZ later this month, which could mean a potential appearance in Kakarot.
With Ultra Instinct at a player’s disposal, Bandai Namco would have to either buff all NPCs in some way or introduce a place with Battle Royale components as described. Much like the training room and the villainous parties, a DLC Battle Royale for the Tournament of Power would allow fans to boost lower-level characters to their heart’s content. Placed alongside an Ultra Instinct Goku as he tears apart the competition, even a well-trained Tien could eventually take on that 250-level Beerus.
Given the supposed 8-12 hour length of Kakarot’s Story Arc, it’s bound to be flush with fun and challenging content no matter the angle. There’s also the question of what—if anything at all—is to come in the future following the Season Pass thus far teased. Released only four months ago, Kakarot remains at the head of a potentially lengthy lifespan, but maybe a sequel is in order.
Next up is A New Power Awakens update debuting later this year. A 500-level Goku Black sounds particularly alluring.
