Boo! Sorry to scare you, but it sets the tone for the Dragon Ball Z villain we’re about to encounter together. Majin Buu is a multi-personality being whose existence cannot be traced back to any particular place or time within the known Dragon Ball Z universe. It has been alluded by its creator, Akira Toriyama, that Buu has existed forever. He’s scoured the universe since its conception seeking new opponents to challenge, thus challenging his own fortitude against them. What makes him most terrifying is that for the billions of years he’s existed, he’s fought the most fearsome individuals that the universe has been capable of producing, and he’s always won.
Kid Buu’s saga spanned the final 38 episodes of the Z series, making it the second longest saga in Dragon Ball Z next to the first Saga, the Vegeta saga which was 39 episodes. It was an epic finale to the long-running series filled with tension, moments of hope, moments of desperation, and much more in between. Buu underwent more transformations than any other villain previously causing the Z fighters too to undergo immense growth and change throughout Buu’s reign of terror. The final episode aired to English audiences on April 7th, 2003 which was tantamount to the closing of a very large tome given the series had now been producing episodes for 5 solid years
Let’s take a close, yet safe look at the devastating final boss of the legendary Dragon Ball Z series, Kid Buu.
25 Kid Buu Doesn’t Have Fingers
He has an index finger and thumb, and where the rest of his fingers should be is a solid “piece of hand,” sort of thing. In the animated series and video games, Kid Buu has 4 regular fingers and a thumb. It’s unknown why Buu took on this transformation from Manga to animated series …
Fans speculate that the change was due to the publishing medium itself.
Fingers play a subtle aesthetic role on screen, whether it be while Buu force feeds himself a ton of sweets or expresses his uncontrollable emotions. Adding fingers to his character on screen was quite possibly a decision made to allow more creative freedom for the animators. Nobody in the general public knows for sure and the real truth may remain to be yet another one of the many mysteries which surround Kid Buu.
24 He Has White Eyes In Dragon Ball GT (Not Red)
Throughout the Z series, Kid Buu’s pupils are red, likely to emphasize his “evilness” as is the case with many malevolent animated anti-heroes. However, in Dragon Ball GT, when Kid Buu makes a cameo appearance, his eyes are fixed with a less aggressive white color. This could be attributed to a variety of potential reasons but it’s likely due to an oversight by the artist, given the gap of time that Buu hadn’t been present in the series. Even if this was a conscious decision it makes sense as Buu’s role as a cameo in GT was not meant to be as aggressive as the one he played during the Dragon Ball Z series. Whether it was an artist oversight or conscious decision is still yet to be determined and is yet another mystery surrounding Buu.
23 Only One Capable Of Standing Against Goku’s Spirit Bomb
The Spirit Bomb is one of Goku’s most powerful and famed attacks. It pools energy from all living beings on Earth and focuses it all into one giant, devastating ball of energy which Goku can then slowly launch at would be evil do-ers. It may be slow, but it’s unavoidably massive. As powerful of a technique as the spirit bomb is, Kid Buu was the only one ever capable of using his strength to not only hold, but actually push back against the mighty ball of energy.
Not even the might Frieza could withstand this technique.
Although his veins were popping, eyes wide open and sweat pouring, he’s the only villain in the series to have ever accomplished this feat and the incredible act of power is yet another testament to just how potent of a foe Buu really was.
22 Cell Gives A Shoutout To Kid Buu
In the Dragon Ball Z afterlife, there’s entertainment (even if you go to “the bad place”). Onlookers from the afterlife intently watch the epic battle between Goku and Buu and during the portion of the battle when Buu proves his ultimate strength by being capable of pushing back against Gokus spirit Bomb, the camera hones in on Cell and a few other contenders who made the mistake of challenging Goku. With his arms cross, Cell then smugly admits through a smirk that Buu is a far greater challenger to Goku than he ever was.
One can only hope that the real life after life has live broadcasts of real-time Dragon Ball Z style fights happening from around the universe. Let’s keep our fingers crossed folks.
21 He Struggles With Speech
Although none of Buu’s forms could be considered as overly “talkative”, Kid Buu’s speech capacity is undoubtedly the most limited which certainly lends to establish his childlike persona.
In the Manga, his speech was considerably reduced in comparison to that of the animated series.
The only legible words he managed to utter throughout its entirety was “You’ve had it!”. Other words and sounds were voiced but were unintelligible quips such as “GIGII!!” What could that even mean? Buu is the kind of character that you have to take his surroundings into context if you wish to dissect the meaning behind his otherwise nonsensical articulations.
That being said, sure, he’s not much of a talker, but he still manages to let everyone know what he thinks and feels, which unfortunately is nothing other than the desire for absolute carnage.
20 Is Kid Buu The Strongest Buu? No, Despite Online Arguments
To keep things simple, we’re only referring to the Buu Saga from the Z series here, from when Buu was introduced to the series up until his defeat and all of his transformations during that period. If we incorporate later iterations of Buu, such as “Uub” from further into the series the debate would change due to the fact that it’s later in the series and everyone is stronger.
Based solely on power level, Kid Buu does have an impressive power level at 8,500,000,000
However, this is eclipsed by Buu’s other form, “Super Buu” whose base power level is a staggering 24,000,000,000 and maxes out at 48,000,000,000 after absorbing the Z fighters.
So if you want to become considerably more powerful, eat some Z fighters!
19 Kid Buu Was Never Loyal To Bibbity
Bibbity summoned Buu, and tried to control him with coercion. At first glance, it seems as though they have a “Master/ Subordinate” relationship. However, they merely have the same goals. Bibbidy seeks vengeance and Buu seeks new challengers to test his strength against. The two goals align but the lack of loyalty can be seen when Kid Buu destroys Alpha Planet and it’s inhabitants, almost hitting Bibbity in the process. Bibbity, in an attempt to control Buu’s nature, attempts to convince Buu that he is his father, to which Buu retorts with a glaring stare. Not the kind of creature you want to receive glaring stares from and you’ve got to hand it to Bibity for having the gall to even attempt to manipulate such a powerful creature.
18 A Kid Without An Age
While some people still think Bobbity created Buu, this is not true. He merely awoke Buu after a long slumber inside a sealed ball which he was locked inside of by Bobbity’s father, Bibbity.
The lack of clarity on this matter gave rise to many questions from fans. The writer of the series, Akira Toriyama later addressed the concern of Buu’s age by stating in an interview that “Buu has been around since time immemorial.”
So, while this clarifies that Buu wasn’t brought into existence by Bobbity, it deepens the mystery to a whole new level insinuating that just as the conception of the infinite universe remains an enigma, so too does Buu which when you think about it makes him that much more terrifying of an individual. What the heck is he really?
17 Kid Buu Follows A Long Line Of Monsters
Kid Buu has the persona of a child, (hence his name) not only that, a spoiled rotten selfish one who shows no sign of compassion towards others and ZERO remorse for the destruction and devastation he causes to those he wreaks havoc on. He’s incapable of developing empathy and his actions are very unpredictable, sometimes catching a snooze mid-battle or randomly banging on his chest like a monkey. These traits line up very closely with the definition of a sociopath and if Buu took the time to sit down with a qualified therapist I’m sure he would then undoubtedly learn the error of his ways and begin the process of regulating his malady with modern medicine (nope).
16 Buu Loves Two Things Destruction And Sleep
Kid Buu has the persona of a child, (hence his name) not only that, a spoiled rotten selfish one who shows no sign of compassion towards others and ZERO remorse for the destruction and devastation he causes to those he wreaks havoc on. He’s incapable of developing empathy and his actions are very unpredictable, sometimes catching a snooze mid-battle or randomly banging on his chest like a monkey.
Although it could be argued that many villains posses these same traits, Buu takes it closer to the sociopath level by combining his evil ways with his childish unpredictability. It’s part of the character’s creepy introduction, and it works well to mask his true power.
15 Android 21 Is Part Buu
Android 21, AKA: the pseudo-leader of the Red Ribbon Army was created by Dr. Gero who collected some of Kid Buu’s cells and used them in creating her Because Buu absorbed so many of the Z fighters during his reign of terror his cells remained imbued with theirs, thus providing Android 21 not only Buu’s abilities but some of the abilities from the Z fighters which Buu absorbed, as well as their inherent strength. So thanks to Buu’s recon, Android 21 has some serious wreaking power! She, like Buu, prefers sweets as well which could have been related to her possessing Buu’s cells. And finally, you can really see her shared genetics with Buu when she reaches her final form and turns pink wearing similar pants to those of Buu
14 Buu’s Real Name Is Josh Martin
Ok well, not really. But the voice actor who voices for Buu in all major publications is named Josh Martin. He’s done quite a lot of voice acting work in the animation industry, a few of his other notable works are various voices in the popular anime series “One Piece” and “Barney & Friends”.
Yes, you read that correctly. The guy who sang the “I love you, you love me” song is the same guy who voiced the most devastating entity in the known universe. Who knows, maybe Barney is secretly another form of Kid Buu!
Either way, the guy has an extensive background. If you like If you enjoy English dubbed anime it’d be worth heading over to his IMDB page to see if you’ve heard his voice elsewhere and didn’t know it.

13 He Has Nearly Infinite Stamina
Just like real life kids, Kid Buu seems to have an unceasing supply of stamina to draw from when he’s not in hibernation mode. This can be seen when shortly after going on a rampage throughout the galaxy and busting up planets as he starts a battle against some fierce opponents simultaneously.
He battles Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta, and Good Buu consecutively
All that without showing any obvious signs of slowing down. That’s takes a lot of energy! One could surmise that all the candy he’s hopped up on is the source of his incessant energy but then again maybe that’s just what happens when you have existed for a literal eternity.
12 He Doesn’t Defend Himself
If you see a bright and colorful snake or frog carelessly meandering about in the wilderness, just don’t touch it. They’re deadly and “would be predators” have adapted to not mess with them for a reason. Buu has adapted the same such freedom which requires him to not care about self-defense, even whilst in mid-battle! It makes sense when you think about it. He’s existed for at least 5 million years, exploring the universe seeking only the most fearsome opponents and has decimated them every single time. After such a successful path of devastation, one could imagine the difficulty it would take to find someone worthy of being fearful enough to defend yourself against. Even if an opponent is to get as far as dismembering Buu, he can simply regenerate his lost extremity.
11 Kid Buu And Frieza Are The Only Two Villains Who Destroy The Core
In Dragon Ball, the Earth has been destroyed, not once, but twice (we poor unfortunate Earthlings!) Not to mention the destruction of Planet Namek. Thankfully after Frieza’s reign of terror, the Z fighters were able to happily wish everything that got in Frieza’s path of destruction back into existence by collecting the Dragon Balls and summoning Shenron (all hail Shenron).
That didn’t guarantee the safety of the planet from future attacks, and indeed Buu took his turn in devastating us. The method used by both villains was a beam to the core, these are the only two villains shown destroying a planet in this manner.
So now you know, if ever you’re in the mood to destroy our lovely planet Earth, fire a beam at its core! (I beg of you, please don’t)
10 Kid Buu Is The Only Villain Defeated By Goku’s Spirit Bomb
Again, one of the most powerful attacks in Goku’s arsenal is the spirit bomb. A devastating ball of energy comprised wholly from the energy of the inhabitants of Earth. While only a few of Gokus adversaries had to deal with the power of this devastating attack throughout the Z series, only one was completely defeated by it. This was Buu. The scene was a powerful one as Buu fought tooth and nail, actually managing to hold the big blue ball off for a time, his efforts ultimately ended in vain and he was blown to smithereens.
It was an ironic ending as the force terrorizing the people of earth was then stopped by the energy of those very same people.
9 Frieza’s Dad Feared Buu
Majin Buu had a reputation for destruction and eviscerating anyone who stood in his way. This reputation echoed throughout infinity and thus to characters such as King Cold who may not have played a large role in the series but his knowledge of these events were passed down to his son, a prominent force in the DBZ universe, Frieza.
King Cold even warned Frieza to never square off with the powerful monster, clearly showing that the King himself had understandably justified fears towards the chaotic monster and that he cared about his son. Nice to see that even super evil villains are capable of caring for their own!
8 Buus’ Name Is Magical
Clearly, Akira Toriyama was at the very least bit of a Disney fan because the villain trio “Bibbity, Boppity, and Boo” derive from the classic 1950’s tale “Cinderella” which is sung by the Fairy God Mother while magic is cast on Cinderella to prep her for the ball!
The words “Bibbity-Bobbity-Boo” had a dual purpose.
They functioned as the chorus to the song as well as the spell itself which transformed the pumpkin into the chariot, the mice into gallant steeds, Cinderellas dog into a doorman, her horse into a coachman and of course Cinderellas shabby dress into a beautiful gown!
Who’d of thought the etymology of such sinister beings takes root in such innocent beginnings. In fact, most all of character names from Dragon Ball have a curious history behind them.
7 His Only Goal Is To Cause Destruction And Test Himself
Villains often have of goals of attaining power by taking over populations and indoctrinating people with their ideas. Buu’s ambitions were a bit different and rested solely on his desire to destroy for fun and test his strength against new challengers.
It’s impossible to say if Buu has always been this way since he’s existed for “time immemorial”, or rather since the conception of the universe. His ambitions could very well have altered over the course of the immense amount of time which he has existed. One could only imagine what existing for billions of years would do to a person.
It’s a philosophical question we can all ask ourselves. “If given Buu’s invincibility and infinite life, would I chose the path of destruction and power or peace and prosperity?” Clearly, Buu went down the evil path in response to his infinite boredom, and thus became only filled with the desire for destruction just for the sake of it.
6 Kid Buu And Super Saiyan 3 Goku’s Power is Roughly Equal
We were all excited to see Goku reach Super Saiyan 3, and finally, witness his exorbitant yellow hair reach his ankles. Not just that, but how would this new found strength hold up against the indomitable Buu?
The battle was short but awesome, Goku seemed to make have a chance at pushing Kid Buu into extinction. Not too long into the battle one can see that this new transformation in Goku didn’t make him stronger than but, but merely matched him closer to Buu’s power level.
However, the real power levels still show Buu as being a slightly more powerful entity in this battle. Kidd Buu’s power level was an astonishing 8,500,000,000 while Gokus fell slightly short at 8,400,000,000.
But who’s counting at that point?
