BioWare recently unveiled a brand new look at Dragon Age 4 at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2020, confirming that it will focus on “what happens when you don’t have power.”

After a brief introduction from BioWare creative director Casey Hudson, the mini-documentary-style making-of trailer went around to producers, programmers, voice actors, and more. It focused on the team behind Dragon Age 4 as much as it did on the game itself, highlighting that blockbuster games are created by teams spanning hundreds of people, as opposed to being products you can tie to a single creator.

Check out “The Next Dragon Age: Behind the scenes” in the video embedded below.

As you can see in the video, Dragon Age 4 is set to feature “original flora, original wildlife, [and] original architecture,” meaning that it will offer a fresh look at the Thedas we’ve come to know and love. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, it places prominent emphasis on “what happens when you don’t power,” which serves as a drastic change from the kind of protagonist you played in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

However, the most beloved aspects of the Dragon Age formula appear to be intact, too. According to the trailer, the game will feature “stories that focus on the people around you and the friends and family that you make,” meaning the series’ focus on forming friendships with your companions will remain a core part of the Dragon Age experience.

On top of this, the trailer notes that not all of your close relationships will be founded upon mutual love. It uses Solas as an example for a polarizing character that pitted fans against one another, as the endgame revelation of his status as the Dread Wolf, coupled with his desertion of the Inquisitor, made him an intriguing character for both his positive and negative traits.

At present, the release date for Dragon Age 4 is unknown. However, it’s safe to assume it will launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
