Dragon Age’s Morrigan has always been an interesting character because she has a tendency to be neither a friend nor a foe — but not quite what you would call evil either. Underneath all the grouchiness, she is is a loving mother to her son who she would go to the ends of the earth.

At her core, she’s a typical witch; spicy, independent, clever, and she doesn’t really trust anybody. While most of the time she’s a helpful ally, there are times when the actions of Morrigan can be quite questionable at the least. Here are all the times when the witch was just straight up not a good guy.

10 When She Was Controlling As Heck

Morrigan is a massive “do it well or don’t do it at all” control freak who either wants things her way or no way at all. If she doesn’t get her way, she will retaliate in ways that will affect others around her and be downright spiteful towards those who care about her.

As beautiful and majestic as she is, it’s not wise to get close to Morrigan because, in the end, all you’ll get is your heart stomped on. It’s not that she’s not capable of love, it’s more that she is the no-strings-attached type who would rather have her eyebrows shaved off than become a domestic wife.

9 When She Manipulated The Empress

In regards to her controlling nature, Morrigan definitely did not choose to get close to Empress Celine out of the goodness of her heart. What better way to be a big influence on the Empire in a super sneaky subtle way than to become close to the biggest one in charge?

She would have easily charmed her because she tends to come off as the cool big sister type and with her magic, would have looked like the coolest thing since sliced bread to the Empress. The idea that she might be teaching her the magic that she has the initial experience with is just another way that she manipulates Celine.

8 When She Did Her Mothers Bidding

Morrigan’s domineering ways most likely stem from the way her mother Flemeth raised her pinned underneath an iron fist. Her fear of the powerful witch made her obey the woman’s every word and as a youth, did her bidding.

Anything Flemeth told her she believed, including that regarding humans. When groups of Templars would track them, she would feign the part of an injured little girl before leading the unfortunate victims to her mother. Eventually, Morrigan realized how Mommie Dearest-esque Flemeth was and swore not to raise her own son that way.

7 When She Stole A Mirror

Stealing from the carriage was very villainous, but what happened following that incident might have been even more sad. At that time, Morrigan was merely curious about things from the human world since she didn’t know or understand much about it.

The mirror would have been fascinating because she could probably see how strikingly beautiful she was, an idea her mother had probably burned out of her long before that. Unfortunately, Flemeth discovered the item and smashed it. This is symbolic of how she was desperate to control and oppress her daughter at all costs.

6 Whenever She Bullied Someone

Morrigan doesn’t really care about people beneath her status or those who she feels can’t do anything to further her cause of power. These people will get endlessly picked on and belittled by her. All of it stems from the self-loathing and insecurity Morrigan carries within herself that grew and festered from those years of isolation.

As a youth, she would secretly watch the behavior inside human settlements but found she was never able to understand them, thus never feeling truly that she could be one of them — or that she could completely belong in any group for that matter.

5 When She Fled While Pregnant

At the end of Dragon Age: Origins, depending on the route chosen and player gender, Morrigan became pregnant with the Warden’s child and left. In the process, she takes away not only the Wardens child but the chance for her to be happy as well.

Until the negativity that her mother seared into her emotional synapses is expelled, Morrigan will never believe she can be happy no matter how she tries or what she does, so she will always run away when that opportunity seems close.

4 When She Wanted Her Mother Killed

There’s no denying that Flemeth, Morrigan’s mother, is completely unstable and power-hungry. In a way, she’s like the unleashed version of Morrigan, the person that Morrigan would be if she truly was evil.

However, Flemeth’s questionability doesn’t mean that Morrigan isn’t a little paranoid. After all, she has a ton of built-up resentment from the years of mistreatment and abuse by her. That doesn’t make it right that Morrigan wanted to kill her just under the assumption she was going to sacrifice her, though.

3 When She Was The Most Self-Centered

Morrigan is a pretty selfish person, claiming that the only reason she would ever protect the Empress is that she doesn’t want to be the one who gets blamed if something happened to her. The people in the palace already look at her strangely, so it’s evident that would have happened if Empress Celine had been assassinated in-game.

Humans have always treated her with a broad suspicion, so in her views, why she should make the effort to actually care about any of them? In her point of view, she can only trust herself.

2 When She Had A Literal Temper Tantrum

Calling Morrigan spoiled would be inaccurate because that would be insinuating her mother let her do whatever she wanted, which was far from being the case.

What is more likely is that, because Morrigan was raised away from people in isolation, she does not understand what being a team player is. That’s why she runs away if the Warden refuses the ritual in Origins and abandons the team for the final battle.

1 When She Killed The Temple Guardian

Nothing really stands in Morrigan’s way of getting what she wants and she will go to all kinds of questionable points to achieve her goals.

Killing the elf Abelas that was guarding the temple in Inquisition didn’t matter to her because she doesn’t see that kind of thing as wrong, rather just another hurdle in her goal. To be fair, the elf was about to destroy the temple, but it was still a pretty blunt move on her part.
