Amongst the various creeds, orders, groups, and options for the players of Dragon Age to engage with are the Mortalitasi. A mysterious group, surrounded by death and all of its elements, the Mortalitasi pose an interesting challenge for players looking for something a little less mainstream to dive into.

The secrets of the Mortalitasi are held close to the Mourn Watchers’ chests. They’re probably hiding in the crypts or in the souls of wandering undead, so this is all we could find about the group. Be wary, though, because once you go asking questions, you’ll get answers you may not want (or you might want them if you’re an aspiring necromancer in-game).

10 Royal Mages

The origins of the order are eternally linked to the Pentaghast family. Advisor to King Caspar Pentaghast, a Tevinter mage named Vitus Fabria created the order. The Mortalitasi serve mostly as advisors just as Vitus had, aiding the ruling party in their mission and ambitions. This position earns them both the trust of the public and the mistrust of the skeptical.

9 Feared From The Outside

To those not involved with the order directly, the Mortalitasi are an intimidating force. Mages with an inclination for the dead and undead alike are likely to spark rumors, but even so, these mages are at another level of conspiracy. Some believe that the mages are participating in dark rituals in the depths of the Grand Necropolis as a sort of acting death cult.

8 Pentaghast Puppetry

The Pentaghast family is known for ruling Nevarra from time to time. Markus Pentaghast, a feeble and questionably sane man, rules over the country in his fragile state with the help of the Mortalitasi at his side. However, are they truly helping?

Their influence over Markus leaves them indirectly in control of the land, often using this relationship to their own benefit. The player character can learn a bit more about this from Cassandra and there is a diplomatic mission from Josephine regarding Nevarra, as well.

7 Necromancy Is Cool, Actually

When it comes to magic, there’s always a group that uses their magic in relation to death and the afterlife, and in Dragon Age that group is the Mortalitasi. It’s in their name: mortal.

Necromancy is a specialization of mage focusing on the reanimation and manipulation of the dead, which is a divisive topic amongst those outside of the group. It’s not outright banned but definitely looked down upon. But in the Mortalitasi, it’s totally fine!

6 Spirit Business

The beliefs within the order differ with their specifics. Mummification provides a safe place for displaced souls to rest when separated from their original host. However, it is possible for these displaced souls to become enraptured by their new host’s unfinished business in life and become warped by it.

Some of the order believe that part of this phenomenon relies on the idea of a “higher dead” in which the soul remains mostly attached to its original hosts, and thus the “lesser dead” become this sort of warped spirit.

5 Ever Forward, Ever Deathward

The inner workings of the organization truly support this once famous byline. There’s a role for everyone amongst the deathly mages, like the Mourn Watch who had absolute authority over the dead. The Guides Of The Path bring the bodies to the Mourn Watch, and a previously popular sect called “The First” gives this section its title.

4 Sidony’s Role In The Mortalitasi

Sidony is a playable character in Dragon Age Inquisition’s multiplayer mode. Sidony is a human mage with a specialization in Necromancy. Raised inside Mortalitasi walls by Lord Henrik, Sidony’s secret existence served to focus all of her energy on developing her magical abilities.

She only wants to unlock her mage potential and thus will gladly disregard anyone who gets in her way. Her hunger for power ultimately leaves her to leave the Mortalitasi.

3 If You’re Looking For Members

If you want to learn about a group, look at its members. Lord Henrik, as mentioned above, is among the notable members. Viuus Anaxas is a necromancer trainer available in Dragon Age: Inquisition who can teach the Inquisitor the ways of death.

However, it is basically assumed that if they’re a necromancer, they’re probably Mortalitasi, too. But he’s just one of many characters in the franchise you might want to look to if you’re trying to understand this mystical order.

2 Secrets Of The Grand Necropolis

In a society that would rather mummify their dead than cremate them, the Grand Necropolis serves as the ultimate mausoleum for those deemed favorable to the Maker. It’s where all the big guns go, shepherded and managed by the Mortalitasi mages.

However, inside the depths of the Necropolis are ritual chambers, enchanted hallways that change position, and bone creatures below even where the Mortalitasi themselves venture.

1 Magic, Amplified

When magic comes into play, the control of objects and resources (like Red Lyrium) can determine who has the power, when, and for how long. The Mortalitasi has a few things of note that help show their motivations through what these artifacts do.

The Orb of Destruction, as its name implies, has immeasurable power that can help the wielder create or destroy breaches in the Veil. The Litany of Adralla, a written tome, can disrupt mind-control spells and can interrupt the casting of many other kinds of spells.
