Dragon Age 2 may have been the least popular of the main games, but it certainly had its memorable characters. Anders is a mage, healer, and the catalyst to the Mage Rebellion that changed the world (for better and for worse).
He was actually first introduced in the Originsexpansion, Awakening, but his character changed a lot by Dragon Age 2. He was sharing his body with a spirit of Justice, and would sometimes lose control. Many players also romanced him, which made for the height of drama by Act 3.
Love him or hate him, a lot of artists enjoy drawing him. Here are ten pieces of Anders fan art.
10 Grey Warden Anders
Made by darantha, this fan art shows Anders in Grey Warden gear. He basically left the Wardens after the events of Awakening, but still has Grey Warden abilities (those don’t exactly go away after you quit your job).
He does not wear Grey Warden robes at any time, but a lot of fan artists like to draw Grey Wardens in their official garb (even if the official clothes were not introduced until certain Dragon Age 2DLC).
9 Cat Lover
It is no secret that Anders loves cats. This stems from Dragon Age: Awakening. The player can gift a cat to Anders and he names it Sir-Pounce-A-Lot and will talk about it in many banters. Unfortunately, he does not have the cat in Dragon Age 2 due to his lifestyle of constantly being hunted.
The artist, nobodyanybody0, has a very soft and whimsical style. It is perfect for capturing a more gentle moment with Anders. They’ve also used this style for fan art of other game series like Assassins Creed, Fallout, and Ace Attorney.
8 Dark Portrait
This moody portrait appears to be how Anders appears in Act 3 of the game. In that Act, he can change his once lighter shade of outfit to something far more raven-like and moody. It reflects his inner turmoil about Kirkwalls’ mage oppression.
According to the artist, fdasuarez, this piece of fan art was a commission. Her art typically features female characters, and her modern version of Disney princesses are among her most popular pieces.
7 Justice
Made by doubleleaf, this is how Anders appears when he is possessed by Justice. The player encounters this phenomenon a number of times in the game. The first time it happens is when Anders loses his romantic partner to the Rite of Tranquility.
Justice tends to take over when Anders witnesses the oppression of mages. However, Justice acts illogically and will typically attack Hawke and the party as well in a fit of rage. It only acts logically that one time Hawke can meet it in the Fade for a quest.
6 Colorful Portrait
Despite the more colorful background, this portrait captures the dark side of Anders. He looks furious. The art was done by Smilika, who has done a variety of Dragon Age fan art.
Other characters they have drawn from the series include Solas, Merrill, Cullen, Zevran, and many others. Outside of Dragon Age, they have also done a number of fan art for one of Bioware’s other major titles, Mass Effect.
5 Japanese Style
While Dragon Age has many fantasy cultures based off of real ones (like Orlais is basically fantasy France and Rivain is Moorish Spain), there is little when it comes to fantasy Eastern influence.
This art, made by maXKennedy, decided to pluck these characters out of Kirkwall clothes and put them in a Japanese style. Besides Dragon Age, the artist has also done fan art for The Witcher, Attack on Titan, and The Avengers.
4 Happy Anders
The talented Aimo has done a ton of Dragon Age fan art. If you are a fan that is very active online, then it is likely that you have seen her art around. She has done a ton of characters!
This particular piece by her shows Anders at one of the better times of his life. Judging by the clothes, it looks like this portrait is of Anders during Awakening.
3 Writing
This adorable style looks like it belongs in a children’s illustrated story. Sir-Pouce-A-Lot is especially looking adorable an Anders’ head. It may even be a callback to him mentioning cats sitting on his head to Hawke in Dragon Age 2 when visiting their home and meeting their mabari.
The art was done by prosoop. Most of their fan art is of Dragon Age and focuses on Anders and Hawke.
2 Possessed
Some artists, like beincraban, have creative design ideas for showing what Justice is like around Anders. This piece shows Justice like a giant cloud. It holding Anders’ hand is a nice touch as Anders appears to be totally possessed (glowing eyes and blue veins are a big hint).
A lot of fans theorize that Justice changed into a demon when it melded with Anders’ emotions.
1 Post Dragon Age 2
This commission piece was undertaken by Finnish artist, theminttu. They wrote that this is Anders post-Dragon Age 2 as a leader of the rebel mages.
Many fans wanted to see Anders in Inquisition but did not. There is concept art that proves that Bioware debated about him making an appearance but ultimately decided not to.
