Video game company Double Fine will reportedly not be publishing games any more, after having been acquired by Microsoft last year.
The announcement made at E3 last year that Double Fine was due to join Xbox Game Studios left a question hanging regarding the fate of Double Fine’s publishing arm, Double Fine Presents.
Now, however, it’s been pretty much confirmed that Double Fine Presents is in the process of winding down. This confirmation has come out indirectly, via one of Double Fine Presents’ developer partners Boneloaf, who are responsible for the quirky gelatine-fuelled beat ’em up multiplayer game Gang Beasts. Mentioning Double Fine’s CEO Tim Schafer, Boneloaf states in a recent update on their site:
Double Fine Presents was originally created in 2014 in the hopes of providing a good way for indie developers to get their games out there. Although the publishing label is now shutting down, Double Fine itself will still aim to boost the indie scene in any way they can, like through their Day of the Devs events, broadcasting digitally on June 22nd and July 20th this year.
What Tim and his company built is pretty wonderful, but with Double Fine Presents winding down due to Double Fine’s acquisition by Xbox Game Studios last year, we think it is a good time for Boneloaf to stand on its own legs and publish Gang Beasts ourselves.
