If players notice issues with their matchmaking for DOTA 2, they have someone to thank for that.
DOTA 2 is a massively popular multiplayer online battle arena game that was developed by Valve back in 2013 for PC. The game used to have the highest concurrent players on Steam, only just recently losing to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive this past April. While DOTA 2 has been struggling with its player base recently, the game has still been going steady even after all of these years.
The DOTA 2 community has already taken enough of an emotional blow with the indefinite delay of DOTA 2 International, the game’s hugely popular sports tournament. Now, some fans are not able to play the game in some regions due to a down fiber cable.
The official Twitter account for DOTA 2 released a statement earlier today stating that due to a cut fiber cable, the US East matchmaking server is temporarily offline. Until the situation is resolved, the account suggests that players try queuing on different servers for the time being.
It is unclear if said fiber cable is affecting other games in the same region, as there has not been any known official statement yet from any other game accounts or companies. Fans of the game are luckily taking this bad news with grace, with popular esports group ‘Team Secret’ even sharing a funny meme for the community to enjoy during this dilemma.
Valve has always made consistent efforts to confront cheating players and to make sure the community enjoys the game, even banning over 40,000 from DOTA 2 who tried to ruin the game for everyone else. So fans can rest easy knowing that Valve is doing everything in its power to bring back the game for the regions affected by this outage. Hopefully, this issue doesn’t go beyond the gaming community and isn’t impacting the internet access of hard working families trying their best to engage in social distancing at home. Even if the cut cable was a prank, these actions could have a major impact on the internet and gaming communities.
DOTA 2 is available on Mac and PC.
