We finally have a bit of an idea of how Doom Eternal’s DLC will unfold. In a surprise trailer today, Bethesda announced that it will be following up id Software’s excellent sequel with The Ancient Gods, a two-part add-on that will bridge the gap between Doom 2016 and this year’s installment.
Ever the marketing geniuses, Bethesda will be holding a full reveal for this first part on August 27, 2020, at Opening Night Live (which is a part of Gamescom). For now, we simply have a 30-second clip that gives us short glimpses of gameplay. It…definitely is Doom Eternal, that’s for certain.
For anyone with knowledge of Doom’s lore, there is a lot to unpack here. Speculation before this reveal was that we’d travel to a few locations mentioned/seen in Eternal and that has come to fruition. This expansion will likely explain how the Slayer acquired the Fortress of Doom and started his crusade to rid Earth of the demon spawn.
There’s also a shot of something that looks like the Khan Makyr, which served as a boss fight in Eternal. Her hatred for the Slayer is probably because of his actions here. We honestly don’t know much else, but it’s certainly food for thought.
