It looks like our European friends couldn’t wait to get their hands on Doom Eternal. Apart from just being a plain awesome game and a successful follow-up to the 2016 reboot, Bethesda has announced that the UK launch of the hotly anticipated sequel has opened to the best numbers in the series’ history. Everyone just wants to go to hell and back.

This news is surprising because physical sales for Eternal were down by roughly 33% from its predecessor. That may be related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic or it could be that players are shifting more towards digital as time goes on. Over the weekend, Steam reported that 100,000 players were concurrently ripping and tearing at once. That’s roughly double the amount of its prequel on Steam.

Bethesda didn’t mention how many exact numbers were shipped, but it is likely to be quite a bit. Fan anticipation for Doom Eternal was through the roof before launch. With stores closing down prior to its official release, many were even scrambling to figure out how to get copies early. Both GameStop and the UK’s own GAME started selling copies on Thursday to help alleviate crowds during this uncertain period.

That likely won’t be enough to topple Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but then does Doom even need to? The game is off to a great start and will likely continue to boom as new DLC is released.
