Playing as the Doom Slayer in Doom Eternal is one of the most fun things to do, both in the singleplayer campaign and newly-added Battlemode. With that said, some players have always wondered what playing a demon would be like.
Meet Battlemode, an asymmetrical game mode that pits two player-controlled demons against the Doom Slayer, who is also controlled by a third player. While much of what the campaign teaches you applies to Battlemode, most of that knowledge is for the Slayer and not the demons. For those new to Doom Eternal’s multiplayer, the Revenant is a fantastic character to learn. He deals great damage and has incredible mobility. If you decide to dive into Battlemode, here are 10 tips for dominating the battlefield as the Revenant demon.
10 Use Defensive Loadout
Demons can choose between one of two loadouts that provide unique bonuses. They typically range from offensive to more supportive playstyles, but the Revenant’s defensive loadout is easily his best.
Armored is the star of the show, granting the Revenant a 50% damage reduction buff for 4 seconds. This can be activated during a risky Rocket Barrage or kiting the Slayer to help win the round for your team. He also gets a Healing Zone that can allow you and your teammate a chance to recover while the Slayer is distracted or retreating.
9 Grab Acrobatics
Acrobatics is an upgrade that reduces the cooldown of your fuel recharge and removes the fuel penalty from dashing. This upgrade is nigh-essential during any match.
The Revenant has little health and his damage is lacking for the first couple of rounds, but this upgrade helps him compete with the rapid-moving Slayer. If you can maintain a line of sight of the Slayer, this upgrade will allow you to weave in and out of cover to stay safe while dodging the enemy’s shots.
8 Stay At Range
While the Revenant’s rockets have travel time, they move much faster than any demon’s attacks in Battlemode. Because of this, you should be fighting from a distance whenever possible.
Rocket Barrage and your default attacks do not suffer damage falloff, meaning that you just need to land your shots near the Slayer to deal optimal damage. Learn to lead your shots and it will be hard for the Slayer to rival you.
7 Use Rocket Barrage
It sounds simple, but you should be using Rocket Barrage every chance you get. If it is available and the Slayer is in an open environment, use your ability to deal massive damage.
Rocket Barrage has a 10 second cooldown, which sounds much longer than it really is. A short skirmish with the Slayer lasts that long, allowing you to use the Barrage frequently. Remember, Rocket Barrage follows where your cursor is so it is possible to redirect your Barrage mid-animation.
6 Feather Afterburner
Flying is one of the most fun things to do as a Revenant. You do have a limited fuel supply, but the ability to rain death from on high is too engaging to pass up.
To help maintain air time, feather your afterburner instead of holding it down. You will get a short burst of velocity to negate gravity and it takes a small bit of fuel. If you feather the input button this way, you can stay in the air for much longer than intended.
5 Grab Unstable Trigger
Your damage as Revenant isn’t that great at the start of a game. After the first round, that flips on its head. Grab Unstable Trigger to turn the Revenant into a killing machine.
This morphs the Rocket Barrage into a superweapon, firing additional rockets and recharges every 7 seconds instead of 10 seconds. As long as the Slayer isn’t flying across the air using his Meat Hook, blast him away with everything you have! You can also fire a default attack immediately after your Rocket Barrage, which can instantly kill unarmored Slayers if all rockets land on him.
4 Master The Jetpack
There are tons of small tips when it comes to using the Revenant’s jetpack. For those who never played Doom 2016’s multiplayer, playing as the Revenant might be a surprise to control.
Remember that your main advantage is elevation and quick dashes, allowing you to dodge the Slayer’s Super Shotgun and charged Ballista shots. Jump before flying to gain more distance in the air and remember to use your dashes even in the air. You have to land on the ground before recharging your dashes, so make sure you retreat to a safe location before doing so. When you master these elements, you can bait the Slayer to wasting ammo while you dodge mid-air.
3 Summon Demons To Distract The Slayer
This goes for every demon, really, but the Revenant has a great selection of demons to choose from. Offensive loadouts can use the tanky Hell Knight while the defensive loadout has the annoying Cacodemons.
The Cacodemon’s stun vulnerability requires a grenade, meaning the Slayer must swap to the Combat Shotgun and use a Sticky Bomb or fire their current shoulder-mounted grenade. This can give you some breathing room to heal or summon a pack of shielded soldiers. Few players use the Plasma Rifle in Battlemode, so these enemies can slow down the Slayer’s ripping and tearing.
2 Play Around Cover
You must play around cover if you hope to survive as the Revenant. Since he has one of the lowest health pools out of any demon, getting hit by a weapon-switching combo can be brutal.
Thankfully, many maps have elevated terrain and large pillars for you to use. Feather your jetpack and fly around cover to keep the Slayer inaccurate. If they are using monkey bars to counter this, feel free to bait the Slayer into a cave or interior where your ally can trap them. You can turn any area into an advantageous position so long as you have clear communication with your teammate.
1 Respect The Slayer’s Range
The difference between a good Revenant player and a great Revenant player is how they handle distance. Those who respect the Slayer’s range will emerge victorious with a solid teammate more often than not.
Slayers have plenty of long-range attacks that can instantly kill unaware demons. Keep breaking your line of sight from the Slayer to encourage him to push. As long as your teammate has your back, you can then move around for a flank or burst him while your team’s summoned demons take the brunt of the damage. If the Slayer gets too close, use your dashes to quickly get more range. Staying at a safe medium to long-range distance is where the Revenant excels the most.
