Possibly the biggest surprise in today’s “State of Play” stream from Sony, a new remaster of Jonathan Blow’s hit 2008 masterpiece Braid is on the way. Initially, it was seeming like this re-release (aptly titled Anniversary Edition) would be a Sony exclusive, but that isn’t the case. Those without a PS4 will likely have one of the various systems this is releasing on in their homes.

This is starting to sound like the days when the PS3 was new, but Anniversary Edition will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, Mac, Linux, and Switch in early 2021. That’s a lot of different platforms, but then Braid is 100% worth the insane list. It’s one of the best indie puzzle titles ever created and kickstarted a generation of creative and unique indie projects. It’s the poster child for small scale success and was even featured in the wonderful Indie Game: The Movie.

As for what this new version will bring to the table, there’s the obvious graphical overhaul that will bring everything up to speed with the 4K generation. All of the artwork is being redrawn to have smoother animation, better transitions between different states, and extra clarity. A toggle to change between the old and new visuals will also be incorporated (much like the Monkey Island and Halo remasters).

If that wasn’t enough, improve sound quality and a rearranged soundtrack are also being included in this package. The new soundtrack is to be composed by Martin Stig Andersen (of Control and Inside fame) and Hans Christian Kock. Much like the visuals, a toggle will be present so you can have the original experience.

Lastly, a rather extensive and thorough developer commentary is being implemented for every single puzzle in the game. During the State of Play stream, the narrator stated this was going to be the most in-depth commentary provided in any game to date. The developers seem to want everyone to know the entire creative process and how Jonathan Blow and his team created the vision that is Braid.

I’m certainly excited, though I initially thought this was going to be a sequel. I’m not sure how one would even follow-up on Braid, but it’s nice that a whole new generation of gamers will get to experience this classic.
