Disney+ launched in November last year and was immediately successful. Its library of both classic and modern Disney films, Marvel superhero films, and TV shows like The Simpsons make it a tantalizing alternative to Netflix. For those wanting to try out the service, Disney has previously offered a free trial. It seems that now Disney has changed its mind, as the free trial is no longer available.
From launch, Disney+ has had a 7-day free trial to let families see if the streaming service was for them, the idea being that kids or parents would fall in love with rewatching their favorite Disney cartoons, only to discover 7 days just isn’t enough. That free trial is no longer available, however.
In response to The Verge, Disney offered a statement regarding the free trial no longer being available. Disney says that, “We continue to test and evaluate different marketing, offers, and promotions to grow Disney+. The service was set at an attractive price-to-value proposition that we believe delivers a compelling entertainment offering on its own,” which unfortunately doesn’t clear up the situation.
Some predict that Disney+ is taking away the free-trial due to the pending release of Hamilton, a recorded version of the Broadway show, on the service. This way, Disney avoids those using the free trial just for Hamilton and then canceling. Whatever the reason, $6.99 a month isn’t too steep a price to see if Disney+ is worth subscribing to.
Disney+ is available now across streaming devices.
