In the dark and troubled world of Dishonored, magic and technology intersect to craft an environment for every type of player. Corvo, the player’s character and acclaimed assassin, is skilled enough with weaponry, but per an encounter with an other-worldly trickster being named The Outsider, Corvo gains unprecedented access to magical abilities should he find enough symbols of The Outsider scattered about the world.

These runes, symbols carved on whalebone, are scattered throughout various chapters and encounters. Collecting them is the key to upgrading your skills, but the limited number of them in the campaign means players will have to go back in with a new-game-plus version to collect every upgrade.

9 The First Encounters (Before High Overseer Campbell)

The Void: The Outsider gives you the first rune in your first encounter. It’s unavoidable, so you don’t have to worry about missing that.

The Hound Pits Pub: After your first encounter, another rune is available at Piero Joplin’s shop. It costs 500 gold.

8 High Overseer Campbell

The Hound Pits Pub: You can find it along the shoreline. Swim or use Blink to reach it.

Distillery District: Granny Rags’ backyard has a shrine to The Outsider where you can pick up a rune. Granny Rags will also give you runes for completing two missions, a rune for each completed task. There’s also one in a bunk on John Clavering Boulevard.

Office Of High Overseer Campbell: There’s a rune on the wall of the primary meeting room, an easy snag. There’s also one in Campbell’s hidden chamber in a glass case. Breaking it is your choice.

Back Yard: There’s a rune in the workshop, accessible by one of three methods: breaking in through a window on the roof, pickpocketing an Overseer, or going through the sewers as a rat.

7 House Of Pleasure

The Hound Pits Pub: The sewers hold two runes once the previous mission has concluded. The first is available in a chest beyond the two weeper enemies, and the second is under the water beyond a set of iron bars.

Dr. Galvani’s Office: The rune in this office is kept in a safe. There are a few options you have to open the safe. You can get the combination from electrocuting a man, find a key from an ex-servant, or however else you see fit.

The Golden Cat: The building right in front of the Golden Cat, between it and the main road, there’s a rune on the top floor that can be accessed easily through the Captain’s Chair Hotel. On the second floor of the Golden Cat, there’s another rune where two guards will be casually talking if the area hasn’t been alerted to Corvo’s presence yet. There’s also the third rune in a room with a courtesan, a room next to where Emily is being held.

6 The Royal Physician

Southern Bridgeway: One room in an apartment building facing the railway has a rune in it if you’re willing to climb a little or blast the blocked door with a pistol.

Drawbridge: Here, there’s a rune in another safe, this time in Pratchett’s house. The combination can be deduced with a nearby note and numbers on paintings scattered about. There’s another rune with an Outsider shrine outside, near where a man is shouting and a dead body lays.

Midrow Substation: The rune is nearby, on a table in the house Corvo enters at the beginning of the section.

North End: This one is in Anton Sokolov’s estate, in the laboratory on the highest level.

5 Lady Boyle’s Last Party

Estate District: An apartment nearby infested with weepers has a rune on an Outsider shrine. There’s another rune at the end of a nearby waterway.

Boyle Estate: The rune here is in an underground bunker, which can only be accessed by possessing a rat or stealing a key from Lydia Boyle’s room. It’s considered one of the best levels in the game, so try taking your time with this one.

4 Return To The Tower

The Hound Pits Pub: There will be a gift on Corvo’s bed if he spared at least one Boyle sister in the previous mission. You can get another by finding Emily. The last rune here will be given to Corvo by Treavor Pendleton if Corvo participated in the duel at the party.

Exterior: There’s one in the bunkhouse next to the Tower entrance, in Hiram Burrows’ safehouse on the top of the Tower (which is outside, hence it’s placement in this section).

Dunwall Tower: A rune is in the torture chamber guarded by the torturer and his wolfhound, as well as in Burrows’ bedroom chest.

3 The Flooded District

The Refinery: There’s a rune just in the middle of an open plain nearby.

Central Rudshore: It is right before the exit after you open the sewer with Daud’s key.

Gateway Tunnel: If Corvo blinks towards the train in the slums, there is a rune on top of one of the apartment buildings.

Old Port District: Granny Mags is back and holds a master key to the sewer, which you’ll need to get the rune. You can get another rune if you drop down a hole near where a group of survivors resides.

2 The Loyalists

The Hounds Pit Pub: Go to the second floor of Pietro’s workshop for a rune during this mission.

1 The Light At The End

Exterior: The rune is outside the Kingsparrow Gatehouse, and it can only be reach by using the drainage pipe in the maintenance room.
