When you first start Disco Elysium you might be a little confused. You don’t know who you are, what’s going on, or whether or not anyone else can hear your tie speaking to you. But despite all this, you’re told that you’re a detective that needs to solve the lynching that happened a week ago.
The problem is, the body is still hanging from the tree. Kim will tell you that an autopsy needs to be performed to determine the cause of death, but it’s impossible while it’s still dangling from the tree. Disco Elysium is a story-driven game and we’re going to do our best not to spoil anything here, but for anyone struggling to pull the body down, we’ve got the solutions you’ll need.
Where To Find The Body In Disco Elysium
The hanged man can be found just behind the Whirling-in-Rags. When you leave through the doors, walk up and then head through the broken fence. In the yard, you’ll find Cuno respectfully throwing stones off the cadaver. There’s quite a lot to do in this space, from interviewing the child to dumpster diving and investigating the footprints. But at the center of all that is the body hanging from the tree.
It’s also worth noting that you can perform an initial investigation on the body before you get it down from the tree. It’s worth collecting as much evidence as you can as it will be useful later, so don’t immediately try and get the body down if you haven’t already done this.
How To Get The Body Down With The Gun In Disco Elysium
The fastest and least professional route to removing the body from the tree is to use your firearm to destroy the clasp holding the noose in place. Unfortunately, you probably don’t have your gun yet. But thankfully, Kim does. Before you get there you’ll have to succeed on a fairly difficult endurance check, so you might have to come back to this a little later.
Examine the noose before you tell Kim of your plan and you’ll be able to specify the part of the noose most likely to break under gunfire. For some reason, Kim will agree to this plan, probably because the smell is overpowering his normally measured and logical mind. Whatever the reason, you can convince Kim to take the shot, but his bullet will fail to connect. This is a necessary part of getting the body down this route so don’t be too harsh on Kim for messing it up.
But now that he has had his turn, you can try yourself. Ask Kim to give you a shot and he will (after berating you for losing your firearm) reluctantly hand over his pistol for you to try. If you’re hellbent on getting the body down in this fashion, you might want to save now so you can reload should something go wrong. This Hand/Eye Coordination check is highlighted in red, which means you will not be able to attempt it again should you fail.
Once you’ve got the gun you can continue to improve your odds by closing your left eye, so you’ll probably want to do that. Ignore Cuno, as interacting with him at this point is more likely to make him louder, not quieter.
If the odds are still low on the Hand/Eye Coordination check, you still have time to put any skill points you have left in the slot before pulling the trigger, but other than that you have nothing left to do but fire.
If you’re successful, the clasp will shatter and drop the body to the floor, giving you access to commit a field autopsy and attempt to ascertain a cause of death. More importantly, it also gives you the opportunity to high five Kim — which you should totally do.
Should your plan fail and you’d rather roll with the punches, there is one more sure-fire way to retrieve the body from the tree.
How To Get Someone To Help You Get The Body Down In Disco Elysium
The other way to get the body down is to have someone else do it. That someone else is called Measurehead, the large racist guarding the entrance to the docks. You can find him on the walkway overlooking the scab protest to the right of the Whirling-in-Rags. There’s a staircase that will lead to the walkway with Call-Me-Manana watching the protest. He won’t stop you from approaching Measurehead but will warn you he is not a particularly kind man.
There are two ways to get Measurehead to help you remove the body from the tree. You can either subscribe to his extremely problematic ideology or get his boss to make him help you. For both of them you will need to have examined the body in the tree, so make sure you’ve passed that endurance check first.
To subscribe to his deeply troubling worldview, you’ll have to speak to pass a Conceptualisation check and then ask him everything you can about it. He will explain his views in excruciating detail, and at the end of it all you can begin to internalize it all with the Advanced Race Theory thought in your thought cabinet as long as you have an empty slot.
Doing this will make Kim think less of you though, so if you’re hoping to make a few friends you might want to try speaking to his boss first.
Once you’ve fully ingrained his views, you can go back and answer his questions about your newfound thoughts. No matter what you say, he will agree and be willing to help you should you ask him to remove the body.
If the former idea understandably fails to float your boat, you can always go and speak to the boss. That means finding a way inside the docks that he is currently guarding, but luckily we have a guide to help you navigate through the secret passages of Martinaise and get past Measurehead.
Once you’ve gotten past him, you can head over the container crates until you find Evrart Claire, the dockworker’s union leader. He’ll try and force you into the horrible chair, attempt to bribe, ask you to do his dirty work, and give you a panic attack about your missing gun. But he’ll also get Measurehead to take the body down. When the dialogue option presents itself, simply take it and he will enthusiastically offer to assist you. Afterward, head over to Measurehead to talk to him and he will go and take the body down for you.
