Codemasters has announced that DiRT 5 will be racing to an October 9, 2020, release date. Speeding over to PC, PS4, and Xbox One, a next-gen port of the game will follow sometime later this year. Players that grab the Xbox One version will be able to make use of Microsoft’s “Smart Delivery” service, but nothing has been stated about upgrades from PS4 to PS5.
To hype players up to get down and DiRTY, a new “story” trailer has been uploaded to YouTube that features the vocal stylings of Nolan North and Troy Baker. The dream team of video game voice actors are back to give you the nitty-gritty on what will be new with this latest sequel.
The career mode in DiRT 5 will focus on the “DiRT Series.” This is a global event spanning different disciplines that will test players to prove their off-road mettle. You’ll be racing against real-life pros in an effort to rank the top of the rallycross league. This is where North and Baker come in, as they are playing fictional characters that are the best of the best.
The campaign will be split into five different chapters that players can tackle in any order. You’ll need to earn stamps to unlock the “Main Event,” which will then progress you to a different tier. This sounds a lot like what racing games used to have for single-player portions before everything became “the same track but with way more laps.”
If you’re a fan of YouTube personalities, channel Donut Media will be providing commentary for the campaign mode in DiRT 5. Both James Pumphrey and Nolan Skyes will be featured in something Codemasters is calling the “DiRT Podcast by Donut Media.” I guess they won’t be getting the fictionalized treatment, but that’s okay.
It has been a while since the last main DiRT title released back in 2017. DiRT 4 was pretty damn solid, but it stepped away from the zaniness that the previous entries had. Hardcore rally fans were pleased, but it was almost like Codemasters was attempting to blend both the mainline entries and its DiRT Rally spin-off together. With Rally standing on its own, it’s great to see DiRT 5 go back to what both 2 and 3 had done.
