It’s a well-known fact that movie adaptations of video games have had a long and unsuccessful history. Another director looking to change that pattern is Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts who has finally given fans an update on his Metal Gear Solid project.

The American film and television director dropped in on Gary Whitta’s Animal Talking show to discuss what stage the movie is at. While he confirmed that a script has been finalized, he regrettably disclosed that no studio has actually commissioned his adaptation to be made just yet. Vogt-Roberts noted the stress involved in creating a movie in Hollywood these days, but assured fans that he wanted to have a suitable budget for the film in order to retain the popular game series’ tone.

Vogt-Roberts has been working on the development of the movie adaptation for six years. He mentioned that he wanted to stay “true to [Hideo] Kojima-san’s spirit” and will continue to fight for his version of Metal Gear Solid to exist. The director also touched on how he had wanted to be filming by now, but the ongoing pandemic (as well as other setbacks) had inevitably caused a hiatus within the schedule. The director also mentioned his plan for an animated series to run parallel with the movie that he hopes will allow the return of Snake’s voice actor David Hayter.

The 35-year-old director premiered his directorial debut The Kings of Summer at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. The film won him the Narrative Feature Award at the Dallas International Film Festival and he didn’t direct another feature film until Kong: Skull Island in 2017. Vogt-Roberts also directed the pilot of the upcoming The Walking Dead: World Beyond as he continues his mission to get his Metal Gear film made.

The Metal Gear series began in 1987 by Hideo Kojima and Konami, spawning several sequels centered around special forces operative Solid Snake. It earned accolades for its achievement in creating “cinematic video games” which have since been adapted into comics, novels, and drama CD’s. The franchise has sold over 55 million copies worldwide and is regarded as one of the most highly influential game series of all time.

Hopefully Vogt-Roberts will be able to get his adaptation rolling again once pandemic’s restraints lift. It is a cinematic experience that many fans are anxious to hear more about, but for now, gamers are happy to fight over which actor should portray Snake.
